Needs splitting

[edit]

We don't write articles on things that happen to share a name, that's what disambiguation pages are for. The notable events should be split into separate articles. Fences&Windows 00:45, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • As the first author of the article, I'm inclined to agree with you. The page was intended to serve as a dab, of sorts. There are a couple of problems, however, with fitting this particular subject matter into a conventional WP format. One problem is that while some of these cases are certainly notable, relevant articles pertaining to them do not yet exist, and it seems unlikely that quality articles will be written any time soon. Even the less notable items should, at least, be mentioned on a disambiguation page, IMO, even if no article is written; when cases are referred to in the media as THE Babes in the Wood(s) murders, that is the sort of term that users are likely to remember, and to search for. Which brings us to another problem - when it comes to making a dab page, cases in which people are murdered are simply not easy to summarise in a pithy sentence on a dab page in quite the same way as a movie or a song is. To any editor wishing to undertake the task, I wish the best of luck. TheMadBaron (talk) 22:10, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have been trying to clear up a backlog of split tags. In most case, I have been de-tagging the articles since in most cases no reason has been given and the reason is not obvious. In this case, I decided to split the article and have since been challenged. This article is a borderline case in that you can consider the subject in 2 ways i.e.
  1. a babes in the Wood murder is a type of murder where the bodies of children (the victims) are disposed of in woodland and list some known instances of this happening. In this case, 1 article would do.
  2. to consider that each incident called babes in the wood murder should be treated as its own notable incident. In this case 5 articles + disambiguation would be required.
Had the original contributer not stated a preference for the second option, I would probably have taken the first option. If having performed the split as requested, it is felt that I made the wrong call then by all means revert me and rewrite the article to give the first slant given. I really won't mind as long as a solution to the split tag can be found. Trust this helps Op47 (talk) 23:52, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Each incident needs examining to see if it is notable enough for a stand alone article. WP:EVENT is the appropriate guideline to consult. Some incidents may justify a stand alone, while others may be best moved into a parent article - possibly the Babes in the Wood article, or the nearest location article. It may be that some incidents don't belong on Wikipedia in any format, and we should consider a deletion process. As an example the material in Babes in the Wood murders (Watton, Norfolk) is best placed in the The Babes in the Wood article; however, as the material is already there, no merge is required. The title is an unlikely search term, so the article could be deleted under A10 or G7 if Op47 says he wishes it to be deleted. SilkTork ✔Tea time 10:05, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Moreover, the watton incident is not an incident named in the mass media as a Babes in the Wood murder, therefore I will remove it Op47 (talk) 13:24, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
