Revised

[edit]

Checked in and was disappointed to see the article has once again regressed, like it did way back when when a standard encyclopedic entry turned into "a group of bassets is called a waddle". I'll try and explain. A line that has a reference is altered to include information that is not from the source. That line and the proceeding ones become confusing and get edited into a summarisation that is not supported by the source the new line references. Filenames and links have been changed but nothing else in the article was changed to reflect it. Perhaps most heinous of all this article started to subtly reek of USA and French nationalism. Guys, it's right there in the history section. This dog was bred in the UK. The information on the breed standard was changed from the internationally recognised standard to the USA standard for no reason that I can discern whatsoever other than an American thinking that America makes the rules. Thankfully they don't, as the breed has not been regulated well in the USA at all and contains the bloodstock of unrelated american hound breeds. The end result of many many users making small changes is that the actual information is removed, incorrect information remains but looks like it's referenced, and quality control drops so low that vandalism and actual contributions are impossible to differentiate. I really care about this breed and I am motivated purely by wanting the accurate information to be available to anyone who looks. This article could potentially be rated very highly amongst dog articles with some more work but we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Anyway, fixed now. gmipTalk 12:39, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]

According to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Capital_letters#Common_names this page should be moved to Basset hound (with the B being capitalized only because it is the first word of the title) and usage in the article changed to "basset hound" and "basset". --Khajidha (talk) 22:07, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Organisms#Breeds,_cultivars,_and_varieties takes precedent. Basset is the name of a group of breeds whilst Basset Hound is the name of this breed. Traumnovelle (talk) 06:17, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AKC

[edit]

Why no mention of the AKC (American Kennel Club) in the article itself ?

The AKC, in the U.S., is the major sanctioner of dogs shows in the U.S. And if someone wants to show his/her dog(s) at such a show, those dogs must be registered with AKC.

Additionally, it is only AKC standards used at those shows to judge the dogs, not KC nor FCI (who hold their shows and are completely separate).

I've noticed the lack of any "AKC" mention in nearly all dog articles. Why?

Just curious. 2600:8800:785:9400:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 05:54, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I think its because the wikipedia articles are using the format of international standard, and then the standard from the country of origin or development. So American-developed breeds would have their standard linked in the profile. Simmy27star (talk) 21:52, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
