Etymology

[edit]

The title and the video was most probably inspired from the 1961 musical "West Side Story", where the title is spoken in the starting scene. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AnrakInam (talkcontribs) 09:31, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bound-fighting?

[edit]

At the end of the clip, when the gang-leaders are going to fight, it seems someone tied one hand of each together, after which they engaged in a knife-to-knife battle. Is this some sort of real gang-fighting tradition? I hoped to find more information on this article, but there was nothing about it. Siúnrá (talk) 12:10, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hard Rock

[edit]

In genre i change Rock into Hard Rock because of the conribution of Eddie Van Halen in the song whor are the guitarist of Hard Rock/Glam band Van Halen and because in the sonf there is a Heavy solo of guitar this why i change rock into Hard Rock —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.250.34.67 (talk) 20:27, 1 November 2009 (UTC) I think its both Rock and Hard Rock.[reply]

I would also like to know what other Jackson songs fall into the hard rock category, due to the presence of someone like Eddie van Halen (and later Slash)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.178.228.88 (talk) 15:38, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think its hard rock... perhaps rock or pop rock. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.65.21.243 (talk) 03:33, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Its hard rock. It is definitely NOT R&B or pop. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Katierj1996 (talkcontribs) 09:07, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the source, and don't add or edit content that would be subjective. Wikipedia aims at genre generality, and in my opinion, it barely qualifies has regular rock.--F-22 RaptörAces High 16:11, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the poster above me. I would call it an R&B or pop song with obvious rock influences (or pop rock). Michael's later flirtations with rock were more "hard rock" than "Beat It". BrothaTimothy (talk · contribs) 18:55, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No way is this song hard rock, it's pop rock at best. I listen to metal and punk and love this song, but it's ultimately a pop song, please change — Preceding unsigned comment added by Realpunkmusic (talkcontribs) 11:35, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

http://acapell.net/39-michael-jackson-beat-it-acapella.html labeled as dance-pop, no mention of hard rock at all. here is another one saying it is pop rock http://smashingrock.com/michael-jackson-beat-it/ a guitar solo in a pop song doesn't make it hard rock, sorry Realpunkmusic (talk) 20:47, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Genres

[edit]

Pop, R&B, and Rock genres are both general (see Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Genre) and they umbrella term other genres, including Hard Rock. Please to not change the genres without sourcing, because that is violating neutral point of view, and you will be tagged. Thank You.--F-22 RaptörAces High 19:37, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The source doesn't say that it's pop or R&B! It's just written that the song went to number one R&B and number one pop. If the song went on those charts it's just because, generally, Jackson's music (like the album Thriller) is classified in those genres. Elfast (talk) 14:42, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Musicians

[edit]

Almost two paragraphs on Van Halen's contribution, nothing on Jeff Porcaro's. I've corrected this egregious oversight. 24.187.214.210 (talk) 15:10, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems worth mentioning that Jennifer Batten played the famous solo on all three of Jackson's world tours. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.246.128.134 (talk) 17:12, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the key, range and tempo.

[edit]

The key was previously listed as E minor, the range was listed as b3-d5, and the tempo was listed as 139bpm. The correct information is E flat minor, b-flat3-d-flat5 and 132bpm. The incorrect key had a citation that led to a sheet music site that was written in E minor because it is an easier key to play in. I sited a michaeljackson.com page instead which has the correct key and tempo. Unfortunately, that site erroneously lists the range as b3-d5, but that is clearly an error as those are not scale tones in b-flat major (and not the notes he sings, if you listen.) Release date

[edit]

The information about the release date that is cited in the article is not in the citation next to it. The current citation does not even give any info about the release beyond the Dileo part. I've tagged this information in the article to reflect that. Andrzejbanas (talk) 20:15, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
