I'm not convinced this is a nineteenth-century folk song. The earliest printed version is in A.L. Lloyd's book "Come All Ye Bold Miners" 1949. There are several websites that suggest it originated in 1844, but no evidence is given. I can believe that that the word "blackleg" originates in 1844. I would agree. If it does date back that far, the lyrics have certainly changed. People would not have spoken this way in 19th century Northumberland. Why does Richard Thompson think that it was around in the 19th century? Epa101 (talk) 15:54, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
