Table

[edit]

I wouldn't mind including a tabular stats section showing Gunn's appearances each season and the club's progress in league and cups. Thoughts? --Dweller (talk) 11:46, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is entirely possible if we have a decent source? The Rambling Man (talk) 12:45, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
League and cup results can easily be sourced. I'll have to check and see if there's a Gunn source that has his appearances. --Dweller (talk) 12:54, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. The sporting-heroes source? --Dweller (talk) 12:59, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you prove to me that sporting-heroes is a RS then sure. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:07, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seems fairly reliable to me. It's commercial, which is neither a good thing nor bad in itself, but doesn't seem to be some vanity nonsense project. --Dweller (talk) 10:36, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, done. But the stats at sporting-heroes disagree a little bit with those at both Soccerbase and in the infobox.... The Rambling Man (talk) 16:45, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

His Aberdeen stats on here conflict with what is on his profile on the Aberdeen FC Heritage Trust site [10]. That says he made his debut for Aberdeen in the Premier Division in 1982. Swaddon1903 (talk) 22:09, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, my point, to Dweller, was that using the sporting-heroes source was all very well, but that it conflicted with at least two other sources.... waiting for his response! The Rambling Man (talk) 22:11, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do we think it's useless? If so, we should remove it from the whole article. Does WP:FOOTY have a stance regarding the site? If so, might be worth sandboxing that lovely table, TRM, pending finding some reliable source. (NB I was going to suggest removing "goals" and adding columns for league and cup finishes) --Dweller (talk) 21:21, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's useless but unless we can reliably source it (and how we define that, I know not yet) then yes, it'll need to be "removed"... The Rambling Man (talk) 21:23, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Source

[edit]

Just a thought: Bryan Gunn has an autobiography "Where it hurts". You can get a copy on ebay for about 4 quid. It would, of course, make a great source. It's just a suggestion as I'm not about to part with my money as it would look a bit out of place on my bookshelf (more physics texts and literature don't you know) but if you're interested in the topic anyway....--IanOfNorwich (talk) 21:56, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Last match for the Dons

[edit]

Can anyone find an RS for Gunn's last appearance for Aberdeen? --Dweller (talk) 11:22, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and the like

[edit]

First thing that occurs to me is that I don't think he was sacked straight after the Col U match was he? I seem to recall them playing at Yeovil in the League Cup and possibly at Exeter? The bit in the lead gives the impression he lasted on game (I could be wrong btw, I think I was in Denmark at the time). Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:38, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, you're quite right. He was sacked after the cup game - Holt scored a hat-trick. I'll revise. --Dweller (talk) 15:17, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

EDP article from today - leaving the county (I thought I saw his house up for sale a couple of weeks ago...). No time to work on this just now, later maybe. Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:00, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spotted this now. Thanks - will integrate. --Dweller (talk) 08:33, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to add some less hagiographical material - a notable sending off, his role in the Battle of Highbury and expand on his dreadful debut for Scotland. This week, hopefully. --Dweller (talk) 07:44, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

editing queries

[edit]

Working slowly through this, but unsure I have much to offer. Here are a few queries:

  1. "In Gunn's opinion, the peak of his playing career was making what he regards as the save of his life in the UEFA Cup match against Bayern Munich that has been called the summit of Norwich City's history." Should it be "the UEFA Cup match against Bayern Munich, which has been called ..."? But is it that match or Gunn's "save" that has been called the summit of X? Also, I'm wondering whether to retain "was making" ... I'm not sufficiently familiar with the sports lingo to decide.
Good one. The match has been called "the summit". It's an interesting fact that a sportsman made his greatest ever impact (in his opinion) in the match which is regarded as the peak of the history of his team. Happy to take advice or for you to edit. --Dweller (talk) 10:33, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Just to be fussy: "the only goalkeeper to do so"—to achieve a double award or just one award? Double is indicated at the moment.
Be fussy - it's in your remit. He's the only goalie to win twice. There have been six awards to goalkeepers, including his two. --Dweller (talk) 13:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Unsure whether it would be clutter to add a year or two in the first two paras of the lead. We've got his d.o.b there and, I guess, some years in the infobox. For example, "Following years of behind-the-scenes work at Norwich during the 2000s", or something like that? Just from the lead, I'm a little confused as an unfamiliar reader concerning what "behind the scenes" means, when he appears to have been playing until ?2008. BTW, does anyone mind the two-digit closing ranges (down from four) in the space-poor infobox?
I'm not too fussed about the infobox years myself. Yes, adding some dates to the lead would be good. --Dweller (talk) 13:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, he played his last professional match in 1998, not 2008! --Dweller (talk) 14:20, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  4. "£1 million for the cause"—check my edit to what this was for.
    Will do. --Dweller (talk) 13:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Fine/good --Dweller (talk) 14:19, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  5. "a variety of" twice in the lead; was the second one OK to remove?
    I'll check. --Dweller (talk) 13:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Fine/good --Dweller (talk) 14:19, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thx. Tony (talk) 16:41, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Is there a link to "saves", for the first occurrence of this technical term? I actually don't know what it means.
Wow. We picked a good person for this - that would never have occurred to me. Looking into an appropriate link. --Dweller (talk) 13:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Caption: "Alex Ferguson, with whom Gunn had a close relationship when manager and young player at Aberdeen", and main text, "He forged a good relationship with then Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson ...". To avoid any sense of impropriety (even though it's dispelled at paragraph's end), could these be reworded? Regular editors here might have better solutions. Perhaps: "Alex Ferguson, the manager at Aberdeen who mentored Gunn as a young player in the team", and "He forged a [lasting? productive? professionally rewarding?] relationship with then Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson ...".
Caption revision is good. I like all of the suggestions for the body text, "lasting" might be the best of the bunch. --Dweller (talk) 13:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Did I get the logical connection right? "He forged a ?lasting relationship with then Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson – evidenced by the fact that in 1997 Ferguson brought Manchester United to Carrow Road for Gunn's testimonial."
    Yes. --Dweller (talk) 13:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Since the source is in possession by someone, could you just confirm that these fragments are not full-stopped ends of sentences? "He could strike a ball as well as anyone, so well in fact that I once played him at centre-forward in a reserve match ... He scored a brilliant goal ... It was a marvellous moment." If they are, it needs to be "match. ... He scored a brilliant goal. ... It was".
    Will do. --Dweller (talk) 13:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  5. "playing in goal"—assuming this is the standard phrase; Americans will be comfortable with it too, I presume. Also, "skills drills" could be an irritating jingle, but if it's a well-known term, even a bit informal, it's OK I think.
Yes, "in goal" is standard for BrEng, except in some regional dialects of the UK, where they add an illogical "s" at the end. I think skills drills may have started as a quote. I'll check. --Dweller (talk) 13:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  6. "Gunn served as a boot boy for Alex McLeish."—sounds kinky. I'll hit the "boot boy" link to learn more. Tony (talk) 12:24, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Progress

[edit]

We're almost ready for FAC. Anyone think any charts might add to the article? --Dweller (talk) 15:01, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Charts of what dude, and reliably sourced from where? The Rambling Man (talk) 15:21, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dunno and dunno. Just asking! --Dweller (talk) 15:28, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You want me to give it a once-over, neutral copyedit-wise that is? The Rambling Man (talk) 16:02, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be just splendid, thank you. --Dweller (talk) 08:43, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well go ahead and check the article history dude. Done it. Dusted. Finito. Nom time. After you fix this... The Rambling Man (talk) 08:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

final c-e

[edit]

TRM, I'll wait till I know you're done, and just do the ending. I'll also italicise all of his biog. titles, and remove the space before the colon (I googled it to make sure). BTW, best my brief contributions be not mentioned in the lead of the FAC nom (kiss of death, I say!). I will keep an eye on the nom, but can't formally !vote, of course.

Gunn sounds like a very interesting character—multifaceted. Seems to me, at a distance, that that's one reason he was so popular. Tony (talk) 08:47, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tony, I'm done. I have taken your lead and italicised the bio titles and removed the spaces. All yours now, and thanks for the help! The Rambling Man (talk) 08:51, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for all you've done. --Dweller (talk) 09:19, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gunn is tangentially involved in this controversy. My view is that it's such an incidental involvement that it's not worth including in the article. Any views? --Dweller (talk) 08:43, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
