Name
[edit]Canada's men's team in this sport is located at Canada national football team and the junior team is at Canada national football junior team. In previous discussions (including here, here and here) it's been noted that the term "American football" is problematic in this context. Specifically, though American football rules are used in the IFAF competitions, Canada's teams are organized by Football Canada and the Canadian football system. Both sets of rules are called "football" in Canada (and nothing else is); "American" just introduces unnecessary confusion. The article was evidently moved for consistency with other articles on women's football teams, however, for the sake of clarity it needs to be consistent with the other articles on Canada's national teams.--Cúchullain t/c 18:35, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, I wasn't aware of those discussions, although I knew of Canadian football. (And thanks for not reverting blankly.) There's a dilemma here, I agree with that. But it also appears, at least to me, that having only "football" in the title causes confusion. Just look at how many association football articles link here.
- What do you think of these alternatives:
- Canada women's national gridiron football team
- Canada women's national gridiron team
- ...and the corresponding for the men's team.
- I don't think we should use "gridiron football" unless we have sources that do that. It is true that just "football" can cause confusion, but WP:ENGVAR is relevant. In Canada, this type football is what's called "football"; no other sport is called "football". The risk of confusion with soccer is clearly present, but this is literally the only country where this is necessary. It can also be cleared up easily with hat notes.--Cúchullain t/c 16:28, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm working my way through the articles that erroneously link here. HandsomeFella (talk) 08:17, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Done. I'm wondering, the national Canadian football teams (men's and women's), do they ever have any opponents? Is any other country playing Canadian football, given that there's already American football?

Canada women's national American football team → Canada women's national football team – It makes no sense for the women's team to use "American football" when the men's team, Canada men's national football team, simply goes with "football". feminist (talk) 05:53, 6 March 2020 (UTC) —Relisting. - Oppose. This would reverse

which appears correct, see Category:Women's national American football teams. However the point of consistency with the mens team needs to be explored too. Not as simple as it might sound. Andrewa (talk) 15:52, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Comment: the Canada men's team is the one which is inconsistent with other teams in its category: Category:Men's national American football teams. Even the US team is named "American football". HandsomeFella (talk) 16:19, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose move. American football is not the primary type of "football" played in Canada. We should look at renaming the men's team instead. O.N.R. (talk) 00:44, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
