I will review this article. Comments in a few days. Sasata (talk) 01:25, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I just read through the article and thought it was quite well done. I have some minor comments and suggestions below. While these are being addressed, I'll check through my New in Chess back issues and see if there might be some more to add; I seem to recall an article about chess in Armenia, and they usually have pretty good Olympiad coverage, so there might be some extra tidbits in issues covering the years they won or placed 2nd. Sasata (talk) 04:20, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the review. Yes, please, if you can find anything I'll be glad to add it to the article. --Երևանցի talk 05:24, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- "According to the same book, until the mid-20th century" we probably don't need the first part as it is clear from the citation where the information is coming from
- removed "According to the same book"
- link chess competition
- done
- do we know who won the first Armenian women's championship?
- yes we do! added
- link soviet championship
- done
- best-in-the-world doesn't need to be hyphenated
- fixed
- all of the unlinked olympiads should be linked: 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012
- linked
- why link math but not history? Probably neither need a link.
- delinked
- "over the age of 6." 6->six per MOS
- fixed
- "Over $1.5 million were spent" 1.5 million what?
- it has the dollar sign in front of it, doesn't it?
- Sorry, I was confused by "were", which led me to believe a word was missing. It has since been corrected. Sasata (talk) 17:20, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- link Defence Minister
- linked
- the cited source does not confirm that the Armenian championships were usually round robins
- couldn't find a source, removed
- Grand Master is written as one word per our article
- fixed
- "He is the only Armenian player to have participated in a Candidates Tournament." source?
- I'm pretty sure he was. You can take a look at Candidates Tournament article (from 1991 on) and see that Aronian was the only Armenian player to be there, but if this is an issue, I can remove it, no problem.
- I think we should remove it if it can't be sourced. Sasata (talk) 03:59, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- the three sentences on Levon Aronian don't need to go in a separate sub-subsection
- what section should I merge it with? "Independent Armenia"? or just leave it where it is and remove the section header?
- I think just removing the subsection header would be fine. Sasata (talk) 17:20, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- done
- the caption to the Armenia vs Azerbaijan photo should probably indicate that it Aronian vs Radjabov on the nearest board (especially since that's not visible in the board sign)
- done
- the wikilinking in the charts is irregular, for example, Aronian's name is linked every single time it appears (is that necessary?), while other players seem to be linked once each; I think it's not necessary to link the country names (per WP:OVERLINK)
- done
- might be good to include that Armenia is ranked fourth by country rank of their top 10 players
- done
- "FIDE, the World Chess Federation, lists 24 active Armenian grandmasters, 4 woman grandmasters, 17 international masters and 4 woman international masters." this statement should probably be accompanied by "As of 2013" (or use the {{as of}} template)
- done
- done
- mention the "the government provides top players with handsome salaries and perks" (also per last source, and similar from here)
- done
- how about mentioning the two chess shows, "Chess 64" and "Chess World"
- done
- who has won the Armenian championship the most times?
- Genrikh Kasparyan has; added
- is Sargsyan the President or the "honorary chairman" of the chess federation?
- the Chess Federation website says he's the president [1]
- do any of the major Armenian newspapers have chess columns?
- I don't think they have columns for chess, but when I was in Armenia I remember that almost all newspapers regularly printed about chess. --Երևանցի talk 19:07, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
I've had a look through my magazines, but unfortunately, couldn't find extra information that should be included. I was thinking that perhaps mention could be made of Asrian's death in 2008 right before the Olympiad, and how this event spurred his teammates to win another olympic title. This would fit in better in there were some explanatory text in the Chess Olympiads subsection ... something to think about if you are intending to develop this article further. Other things that might be worthy to have in the article are mention of any regular, recurring GM events played in the country. Is there a Tigran Petrosian memorial every year? The Asrian memorial is now in its sixth year. Does Armenia have a yearly open championship? If so, what's the average turnout? Is the Chess Academy of Armenia notable?
Overall, I think the article meets the GA criteria. All images have appropriate licenses. Spotchecking of several online sources revealed no problems with close paraphrasing or other issues. I'll be happy to promote once the unsourced statement is removed. Sasata (talk) 03:59, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- I removed the unsourced sentence. I will probably expand the article later, when I feel like editing it again :) Thank you for your review! --Երևանցի talk 01:42, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome! Promoting article now. Sasata (talk) 02:44, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- "over the age of 6." 6->six per MOS. From MOS:NUMERAL: "Ages are typically stated in figures, unless it is a large, approximate quantity: an 8-year-old child, the 69-million-year-old fossil." So I'm confused. Please explain. Thx. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 05:34, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Forgot about that line! Will fix. Sasata (talk) 06:47, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- "FIDE, the World Chess Federation, lists 24 active Armenian grandmasters, 4 woman grandmasters, 17 international masters and 4 woman international masters." Not sure now the numerals are consistent w/ MOS:NUMERAL. Any help to understand, thanks. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 06:09, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- "Comparable quantities should be all spelled out or all figures: we may write either 5 cats and 32 dogs or five cats and thirty-two dogs, not five cats and 32 dogs." Sasata (talk) 06:47, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I understand. (What I was thinking was that since "4"s are normally spelled, and "24" & "17" can go either way since two or less words, then spelling out all of them would be the best course.) It seems you're using the first occuring number, "24", as precedent for the rest of the sentence!? Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 10:36, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
