Classical Gas

[edit]

What sources are there that prove the version of classical gas often credited to clapton is actually performed by Knopfler? I dont doubt it, i just want to make sure this is correct. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.210.208.89 (talkcontribs)

I have doubts that there is actually a Knopfler version out there. The version I've heard that is often credited to Clapton is actually the original by Mason Williams. Furthermore, I can't find any sources that mention a Knopfler recording, much less one that was somehow leaked and is now available on filesharing networks. -Big Smooth 23:22, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Upon further review, I removed the reference to Knopfler. It's just not verified per Wikipedia policy, and was added by User:60.240.64.49 in his/her sole edit to Wikipedia so it could easily be wrong or a hoax. -Big Smooth 23:29, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Movie Soundtrack

[edit]

Classical Gas was used in the soundtrack for "The Disk", an Australian Movie about the reception of Television Signals from the first moon walk. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/soundtrack?ref_=tt_ql_trv_7 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pschulz01 (talkcontribs) 02:07, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fileshare

[edit]

I personally think the filesharing networks comment is a little amateur for an encyclopedia. It's nothing to do with the history of the song, and it is information relevant only to those in that culture. Most likely written by one of them. Tilgrieog 12:24, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree and have blown the fluff away. Candy 12:01, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
911tabs.com lists 59 tabs of Classical Gas under Clapton's name, more than anyone else(Mason shows 11). A search of any large guitar forum will turn up many references to Clapton's version of the song. It isn't limited to filesharers, though it certainly started there. Album

[edit]

The album associated with this article is not the album on which the song originally appeared, as explained in the article. Does anyone have the info for the 1968 version? Seb144 (talk) 01:44, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

song or album

[edit]

Is this article about the song or the album? The history section seems to be about the song, but the infobox and tracklistings are for an album. -- Intractable (talk) 21:28, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Someone please remove the 3rd link to a youtube video. Johny Be Good is not Classical Gas. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Flight Risk (talkcontribs) 07:54, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cover

[edit]

It should be noted somewhere, that the cover of this album contained another breakthrough in art. Mason is shown standing next to a lifesized painting, rendering a Greyhound bus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CaptHensen (talkcontribs) 12:21, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tommy Emmanuel

[edit]

"The most notably popular variation was that of Tommy Emmanuel." Citation needed or vandalism? Seems like vandalism, as right now, iTunes' "popularity meter" has Williams' version at a full 12 bars, and Emmanuel's with only two bars. What's going on there? o0drogue0o 10:50, 21 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by O0drogue0o (talkcontribs)

Other Covers

[edit]

I know two covers not mentioned here: The Ventures has made a cover, but I don't know on what album it was first released. It's found at least in Walk Don't Run 3CD box. Also in the Simpsons Lisa Simpson played a version of Classical Gas in one of the early episodes where the workers in the Mr. Burns nuclear plant went on strike.

Title

[edit]

It would be interesting to know what the title means, if anybody knows. This would be a good addition to the article. Mnealon (talk) 09:31, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I had always assumed that the "gas" was the slang use of the term, common in the 1950s and 1960s, denoting approval, like "that's a gas!". However, I read somewhere (Ithought it was here but it doesn't show in the current version) that actually it's the short version of "gasoline" (petrol to you Brits) and that it's a reference to the supposed firey nature of the piece, or something like that. Musicology

[edit]

Could some-one please put in at least a little musical information, e.g., what key is it and what time it is? Kdammers (talk) 20:25, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clapton

[edit]

If Clapton never covered it, what is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gkLzLxVtoM ? Is this a false attribution?Kdammers (talk) 20:27, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kdammers: That sounds like the original. Highly doubt that's Clapton Mlpearc (open channel) 20:35, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The YouTube page implies the recording is from Complete Clapton, but it isn't. Yet another reason why we don't use YouTube as a reliable source. NewYorkActuary (talk) 22:00, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wagner Tuba

[edit]

Is it worth mentioning that the brass instruments heard are Wagner Tubas? There's a very early 70s sounding synthesizer cover version by Begger's Opera

= arrangement = This song it's not a hit without orchestral arrangement. There's mention of The Wrecking Crew here but The Wrecking Crew but that's likely because of a drum part and or a base part. somebody wrote a fantastic string arrangement for this song and I can't find them credited anywhere. Based on his work it's pretty certain that Mason Williams didn't arrange the strings on the horns or the entire orchestral arrangement for this. It's a specialty. It's really a shame because I stick by what I said. Without that orchestral arrangement, it's not a hit just like Elton John's " your song" is not a hit without that Paul Buckmaster arrangement.Jackhammer111 (talk) 22:11, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
