Duplication?
[edit]Should this be merged into Columbia Bar? tedder (talk) 15:18, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- No, I don't think so. I'm not 100% clear where the estuary ends and the river begins, but the estuary is going to include all the water at the mouth of the Columbia and the definition of it is ecological as well as geographical, while the bar is a geographical landform that is a series of shoals and sandbars within the estuary. Definition of the Columbia River Estuary
[edit]Generally, the extent of tidal influence all the way up to Bonneville Dam and Willamette Falls is not considered part of the estuary but rather the tidal river. Also the geographic definition and salinity intrusion definition are not the same. Salinity intrusion based on X2 is not Welch's Island but further upstream and varies depending on discharge and neap/spring tidal cycles. Similarly the Estuarine Turbidity Maximum is an important characteristic. I think, overall, this article can be greatly expanded and be distinct from the Columbia River as a whole. There is a lot to cover including the history, physics/geomorphology, ecology, commercial use/navigation, etc. --Curoi (talk) 17:42, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
