Death year

In 797 Constantine was captured and blinded by the supporters of his mother, who had organized a conspiracy. According to most contemporary accounts, he died from his wounds a few days later, leaving Irene to be crowned as first Empress regnant of Constantinople.

Yet the infobox says he died in the year 802, five years after the above. What's the story? -- Jack of Oz ^[Talk] 04:08, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly an error, probably somehow confused with Irene's death date. A Hungarian lexicon form 1914 is probably not the best source for a Byzantine ruler... Thanks for bringing this up. Constantine ✍ 06:51, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Huh?

So why is this guy listed among the saints? -particularly when near the close of his reign, he was an iconoclast. (I know his mother is counted as one, but I gather that's because she built a monastery.) Manannan67 (talk) 04:38, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Irene isn't a saint because she built a monastery - she's a saint because she (for a time) put an end to iconoclasm in 787. Don't know about Constantine VI but he also partook in that council so might have something to do with that. Ichthyovenator (talk) 09:25, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Death year, Part II

It is unknown when exactly Constantine died; it was certainly before 805, though he may have died of his wounds shortly after being blinded.

But we're also saying his son Constantine was born posthumously on 1 January 798. Doesn't that mean that Constantine VI certainly died before 798? -- Jack of Oz ^{[pleasantries]} 19:23, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
