Denys Shmygal → Denys Shmyhal – Best transliteration of the name and commonly used in media Davidbowtie11 (talk) 16:30, 4 March 2020 (UTC) The name might need updating to Shmyhal, rather than Shmygal

- I agree, Shmyhal is also a correct version from a linguistic point of view Extended Cut (talk) 20:27, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
I also agree. Shmygal is the Russian transliteration. It shouldn't apply to a Ukrainian surname. Definitely should be changed to Shmyhal. YantarCoast (talk) 09:45, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
Support: Most have already listed all my arguments. Ivario (talk) 13:20, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- I've moved it but I didn't see the discussion so it still may be continued. My point is that the Ukrainian "г" applies to fricative [ɣ], it's not same with Russian [g] (there it is also indicated by "г"). So of course Shmyhal is more correct. We can't transribe the given name from Ukrainian and the surname from Russian within the same line. --Wolverène (talk) 08:01, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- It's actually [ɦ], not [ɣ]. Extended Cut (talk) 18:48, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
- I asked for technical input at WP:RM as I don't see the need for a revert at this moment while the discussion runs its full course. Agathoclea (talk) 08:27, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

Parents
[edit]Is any information available about his parents? I found this source, but unsure if it is accurate:

Heritage
[edit]Is he of Jewish heritage? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 01:48, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, according to the Jerusalem Post. Article updated. Boscaswell talk 19:07, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- Also according to the new york times: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/24/world/europe/volodomyr-zelensky-ukraine-jewish-president.html 67.191.230.181 (talk) 18:59, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- NO, he is not Jewish! According to that New York Times article, of 24 April 2019, the Jewish prime minister was Volodymyr Groysman, who did NOT stay on once Zelensky was sworn in. The Jerusalem Post article ALSO referred to Groysman, NOT Shmyhal.--FeralOink (talk) 15:34, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Has Shmyhal ever been elected?
[edit]There’s no mention in the article of an election. So he’s never had to face an electorate and he’s Prime Minister? Is that true? Boscaswell talk 19:16, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Typo in opening paragraph
[edit]The last sentence of the first paragraph should say "the Honcharuk Government" rather than merely "Honcharuk Government". A minor edit which I would have done myself, but the page seems to be locked from editing - so I thought I'd flag the matter for whoever has the authority to edit the page. 45.93.75.130 (talk) 12:20, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- I've fixed it. Kleinpecan (talk) 19:51, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
Dubious claims about heritage
[edit]A Jerusalem Post article quoting an Islamic scholar and claiming that Shmyhal is Jewish is not a reliable source. There is no primary or reliable source that mention Shmyhal being of Jewish heritage and it is not mentioned in the Ukrainian or Russian Wikipedia articles either. Wikipedia administrators need to protect these pages from vandalism Rahammz (talk) 23:38, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
- You are correct, Rahammz! Denys Shmyhal is NOT Jewish. This New York Times article, of 24 April 2019, does not even mention Shmyhal's name. It refers to Volodymyr Groysman, who was Shmyhal's predecessor as Prime Minister of Ukraine. I read a Jerusalem Post article that referred to the "Jewish Prime Minister of Ukraine, Volodymyr Grossman" with a publication date in late 2018. I haven't seen any source regarding Shmyhal's heritage being Jewish, anywhere.--FeralOink (talk) 15:43, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
