Proposed name change/abolition[edit]

I reverted PabsP's edit that said the seat will be abolished. What's happening is that one seat will disappear (Reid), the entire state has to be redistributed, and most if not all other seats will be changing their boundaries. In addition, Lowe will be renamed McMahon. For WP purposes, the Division of McMahon is a separate article from Division of Lowe, but technically the seat will not be abolished in the way that Reid will be. -- JackofOz (talk) 22:03, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While that's true, Lowe will to all intents and purposes be abolished, just like Balaclava and Darling Downs were in 1984, despite the fact that they were renamed Goldstein and Groom. Perhaps a suitable compromise would be to say that Lowe will "cease to exist", but that it will "essentially be replaced by McMahon". Of course it's important to emphasise that these are draft boundaries and, for all we know, Lowe might still be around next time anyway. Frickeg (talk) 04:14, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I'm not entirely happy about this. If the name change were happening in isolation from any general redistribution, would we be saying it was being "abolished", or simply "changing its name"? I think we'd be saying the latter, just as when Division of Ballaarat changed to Division of Ballarat. That was a simple spelling tweak, and the name essentially remained the same, but the principle is still the same: the name was changed. It wasn't that Ballaarat was abolished and Ballarat was created in its place. I don't see the need for the "cease to exist" and "essentially be replaced by McMahon" language. Why not just cut to the chase and say what's happening - the name is changing. -- JackofOz (talk) 06:35, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that legally seats were abolished not renamed? Paul Austin (talk) 12:51, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to the report of the Redistribution Committee, the proposal is that the seat be "renamed" - see paras 7, 80, 81 and 82 of the report. -- JackofOz (talk) 13:44, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
