History of Divorce in Canada

[edit]

I think we need an article on the history of divorce in Canada. Here is an example from my own family: my cousin John, who was estranged from his wife, moved in with Ann, who had her surname legally changed to his. They had children and in most ways behaved as husband and wife, but with endless legal complications. For example, both were legally parents of their children, but were legally unrelated to each other: neither could authorize emergency medical treatment as next of kin. How common was this kind of arrangement? Did Canada recognize foreign divorces? How many divorces were approved by the Senate? Dynzmoar 12:17, 7 July 2006 (UTC) (Proudly Canadian-American!)[reply]

  • The article is inaccurate in that it implies that all divorces in Canada before 1968 had to be approved by the Canadian Senate. Most of the provinces had divorce laws, except for Newfoundland and Quebec. However, the grounds for divorce were very limited. See [1]. --99.147.219.230 (talk) 01:51, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This needs some serious updating. 24.72.126.180 (talk) 19:58, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
