This page is terribly written, and the Application in Art section is horribly wrong

[edit]

I don't know if this was written by a hallucinating AI, but NO, Burnt Umber is NOT a combination of phthalos and ultramarine! It is literally burnt soil, hence the name. The pigment is PBr7, calcined iron oxide. Phthalocyanines are, as the name would suggest, blues, and they are in no way related to Burnt Umber, or any other earthtone. The same is true for Ultramarine. Phthalos and Ultramarine mixed with Burnt Umber would make black, they are on the opposite side of the spectrum. And there's no "Permanent Rose," which in itself a hue of a fugitive color! This must be machine made, I don't believe anyone so ignorant on a subject would decide to write an entry on Wikipedia.

Van Dyke Brown is NB8, it's a natural earth pigment made of peat, coal, and moss. It has almost fully been replaced on the market with hues made from more permanent pigments, generally PBk6/9 + PBr7/PR101. Why are you talking about old photographs in the painting section? Earth tones would not be a concept if it were not for fine art proliferating the use of earth in various shades and hues, they can be used for anything, from portraits to landscapes, and anything in-between.

Sepia was cuttlefish ink, it was used in fine art AND photography! Sepia photographs were literally using the same substance that Da Vinci painted with centuries prior. Sepia, being a natural organic substance, is naturally fugitive (impermanent,) and it has been replaced with lightfast hues made from mixtures of black and PBr7 (like Van Dyke Brown above,) although modern manufacturers do not correctly label their Sepias as hues (also like Van Dyke Brown.)

So whoever, or whatever, wrote this worthless garbage has no knowledge of color, art, photography, historical pigments, or earthtones. This section should be deleted and completely rewritten by someone competent, and it should touch on ochres, siennas, umbers, red earths, green earths, and mineral colors. 2600:1700:7F:8580:4A78:DD6:240C:F2F (talk) 19:53, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
