Unfocused

[edit]

It isn't clear what this article is about: is it the man, or the newspaper? The title "Domingo Sarmiento's El Progreso" doesn't conform to requirements of article titles, and having the correct title would guide the development of the article in one direction, instead of two. Note that Spanish-wiki has es:Domingo Faustino Sarmiento but no article about the newspaper. Finally, the references refer to other Wikipedia articles, which is forbidden, as Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source. Mathglot (talk) 10:12, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I must have been busy when I came to this the first time, as I didn't even link to the article on Sarmiento, which is obviously substantially larger, better-sourced etc. My thinking is that this is about the paper, so I'll change the title in a moment. Notability is definitely a concern, since most of what's said here is said miles better in the Sarmiento article and those sort of "personal newspaper" publications are always on a very fine line between being a thing unto themselves and just an outgrowth of the main writer - at least, I know they are in other places, so the same is likely to apply in Latin America as well. Article title disambiguation

[edit]

@BigHaz: Not sure if El Progreso (Sarmiento) is a valid use of parenthetical disambiguation or not, as it may violate the principle of least astonishment, since one would expect 'Sarmiento' to be the town where the newspaper was published, but instead it's the name of the paper's founder. I'll notify WikiProject Disambiguation and see what they think.

There is a further complication in choosing the correct title here. Normally, if one were to use parenthetical disambiguation, one might pick El Progreso (Chilean newspaper). However, that does not work in this case, because there have been over a hundred newspapers in Chile by that name.[1] Interestingly, although Progreso (disambiguation) has dozens of entries, Chilean newspapers is not one of them, which may simply reflect the lack of Wikipedia coverage on that topic. List of newspapers in Chile, for example, has nothing by that name. (Neither do the corresponding articles on es- or fr-wikis).

There's so little content in this article, I'm inclined to just propose that it be merged into Domingo Sarmiento. Nevertheless, I'd like to hear from any disambig gurus how they would solve (or would have solved) this, had there been plenty of information for an article about this newspaper. El Progreso (Chilean newspaper, 18xx-18yy)? Or perhaps, because of the "over-100-El-Progresos" issue, would in fact "El Progreso (Sarmiento)" be the best choice here, even though nominally it's a violation of typical paren dis rules? Mathglot (talk) 20:49, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly wouldn't object to the merge if that's the direct you feel is best to move in. You're right about the better parenthetical title, too. I took the quick-and-dirty route before it became apparent there was more salvage required than I could provide in the first instance. BigHaz - Schreit mich an 22:17, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a problem with using El Progreso (Chilean newspaper). As long as it distinguishes it from other existing en wiki articles, that's enough. PamD 23:12, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BigHaz: You did fine; just trying to continue the improvement. Also, good point by User:PamD; even if there are 100 Chilean papers called that, we don't have any of them now, so it's sufficient. If someone ever wants to add another Chilean newspaper by that same name, the issue could be revisited at that time. In any case, let's wait and see if there are other comments, and if not, we can decide on merge or rename. Mathglot (talk) 23:18, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
