Name

[edit]

I'm not sure that the current title is the best one for this article. I assume that this naming comes from its US counterpart, but for the US this makes sense, since there are State Senates there. In Brazil, however, there is only one Senate, since the state-level legislative branch is designated "Assembly" (and its unicameral), which would make it sufficient to call it "Senate of Brazil". There are also historical reasons, which I suppose are actually more relevant: although the Senate is now the upper house in the legislative branch at the Federal sphere of power, its origin in Brazil dates back to the times of the monarchy, something that should (and in time, will) be explained in this article. I believe that the more general title "Senate of Brazil" would work better for an institution whose background predates the Federal Republic in Brazil. Thoughts? Yep, I'm agree. I'm changing it right now...
By the way, we have to work on this articles a bit. If you see the page history you'll understand what I mean. José San Martin 03:11, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have now performed the move properly. Redux 23:07, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article has now been moved without discussion to "Federal Senate (Brazil)". I disagree with this move because "Federal Senate" or "Senate of Brazil" are phrases that can be correctly linked in an article without piping. The link "Federal Senate (Brazil)" will always have to be piped to avoid awkward sentence structure. Ground Zero | t 15:19, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copy editing History section

The History section needed lots of copy editing. If someone can improve what I did please do. Foreignshore (talk) 03:47, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming article (again)

[edit]

It is inappropriate that the page "Federal Senate" should be about the Brazilian Senate. I propose moving this page to "Brazilian Senate" because it unambiguously makes it clear that the page is about the Brazilian (and not American or otherwise) Senate, and to make the "Federal Senate" page redirect to a disambiguation page. I will do this in a week unless anyone objects. -Ramzuiv (talk) 19:56, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 1 February 2022

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved as proposed. Alternative Federal Senate of Brazil didn't get as much support as the original target. (closed by non-admin page mover) Vpab15 (talk) 23:03, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Brazilian SenateFederal Senate (Brazil) – The correct name of this body is "Federal Senate" (Senado Federal), not "Brazilian Senate" (Senado brasileiro) as the article is currently named. However, I agree with the previous move proposal that naming it simply "Federal Senate" would be ambiguous. I propose moving the page to Federal Senate (Brazil), therefore using the correct name while avoiding ambiguity through parenthetical disambiguation, such as in Chamber of Deputies (Brazil). • Support per nom. I also agree that "Federal Senate of Brazil" would provide a misleading impression of this being an official name. A disambiguated title is better. BD2412 T 22:01, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
