Merge with Baltimore

[edit]

Could this be merged with Baltimore? Another way of asking that is, can you see this article becoming full length and encyclopedic? I don't really know, I am only wondering. rhyax 07:23, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I could definitely see this becoming a good article if someone would take the time to write it out. Fells Point has a great historical story to it and is one of the oldest areas in Baltimore City. --ScottyBoy900Q 13:07, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

According to the official site and the historical society's site, the actual name is "Fell's Point." Can this be fixed without breaking all the links?

Citation for #2 immigration status

[edit]

A note on the Fells Point Preservation Society] website says "Baltimore was second only to Ellis Island as a port of immigration." That agrees with the Port of Baltimore page at the Maryland Immigration Digital Library, which describes the B&O Railroad building an "immigrants pier" and says that "Baltimore became second only to New York in the number of immigrants received, and this service lasted until World War I" (and provides a published text citation). I assume that pier was in Fells Point? What citation should be placed in the article? Should the wording be reduced to "Baltimore ports" being second to Ellis Island until the location is definitively pinned down to Fells Point? DMacks 04:18, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh i know baltimore is #2 i am not disputing that, it's the idea that the majority of them passed threy Fells as their point of entry. Fells, specificaly the Hendersons Warf, was the parimary Port of entry for immigrants prior to the civil war, but aft the civil war, US immigration set up an immigration station across the harbour in Locust Point (B&O rail yards) and down the harbor in Canton (near Clinton Street to serve the PRR), with the Locust Point haveing the majority of all of the three. the B&O rail building that you are talking about is more then likelythe station in Locust Point, as the B&O construced and owned the facalites, one of the reasons why Baltimore never got the immigrant hit like new york, was the fact it ws so much easier to jump from ship to rail in Baltimore then in New York, also sonidering that many immigrants to baltimore were already headed elswhere prior to their arrival, duse to the fcat that the B&O had established partnerships with many of the steemship lines that came to Baltimore. Their is more info Here, and i am going on personal research of my own.--Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:56, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Bars

[edit]

Is there any way to get a full listing of Fell's Point bars with their locations? I question the accuracy of the statement that 120 bars exist in Fell's — I believe it to be more like 60-70. --K-lit 19:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be interested in doing this though it would require a little extra help to keep up with any changes. I can make a draft today. I have to find the article from several years ago talking about alcohol density, in particular that Fells Point has more individually licensed establishments per square (foot, mile? I don't remember) than anywhere else, including Vegas. The 46th district (which includes all of FP, Fed Hill and some other areas) has enough bars that you could go to a new place every day for 4 months and never hit the same place twice. Chrissymad (talk) 13:12, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to help out with this as well. Bars do frequently come and go in Fells Point though (the bar that was Bad Decisions most recently has been at least 7 different bars in 40 years). RickinBaltimore (talk) 17:48, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Has anyone tried to contact Fell's Point Main St Association? Especially post-COVID there will likely be many updates to #of bars/restaurants in the area. Cwolf654321 (talk) 02:37, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

I'm just wondering why this article is at Fells Point, Baltimore and not simply Fells Point? Naming conventions indicate that an article should be located at its name's simplest unambiguous form. I have never heard of another place called "Fells Point", certainly there is not another Fells Point that is notable, and there is no Fells Point (disambiguation), just Fells Point which is a redirect to here. So, why are we here and not at Fells Point? Wilhelm_meis (talk) 11:48, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. See Upper Fells Point. Folklore1 (talk) 15:04, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Enviromental impact statement and Fells Point

[edit]

I do not know if this is of interest, but defeat of the highway destroying Fells Point was accomplished by a review of the Enviromental Impact Statement justifying the highway. This was one of the first EIRs ever written. As was shown by Barbara Mikulski's objections to the highway that were placed in the Federal Register, the EIR was a pretty pathetic piece of trash–ill written, self-contradictory, and so lacking in common sense as to give rise to the writer(s)' sanity.

A local freelance journalist analyzed the EIR and wrote a 4,000 word article mocking it; the article ran in a shortlived alternative newspaper, Port City News. Barbara Mikulski picked it up from there. She had the article entered in the Register as part of the hearings that halted the construction.

It was the peak of my journalism career.

Fell's ... or Fells?

[edit]

I was always under the impression that Fells Point did not include the apostrophe in it's name. Google Maps lists the area as "Fells Point," but I am also familiar with the history re: William Fell and the apostrophe would make sense. However, is it historically accurate and, more importantly, actually correct?

Move and rename proposal?

[edit]

I've been sitting on this a while, but it really should be at Fells Point, no apostrophe and no "Baltimore". Praxidicae (talk) 21:49, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

THe neighborhood is Fell's Point though, with the apostrophe, like Hell's Kitchen, so wouldn't the proper name be with the apostrophe? Also, just doing a quick search, it looks like the general naming convention for neighborhoods does include the city name. (For example Pigtown, Baltimore, Sandtown-Winchester, Baltimore). RickinBaltimore (talk) 21:56, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
RickinBaltimore It's actually not and the and despite the debate the most common way to use it is without an apostrophe. In fact all of our signs lack the apostrophe. But it should definitely be moved to just Fells Point whether we have an apostrophe or not. Praxidicae (talk) 23:59, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And this was moved without any discussion Praxidicae (talk) 00:02, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Funny, I grew up in FP and saw it both ways, but seemed to have seen "Fell's" as the proper name (though I know what signs you're talking about along Broadway). That being said "Fells" is pretty commonly used too (and I'm not one to argue something as minute as that). Thinking about it, I wouldn't be opposed to the name change, however looking at neighborhoods in the city on Wikipedia, there is a consistent use of ", Baltimore" for the title of the page. RickinBaltimore (talk) 00:33, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
RickinBaltimore Could the use of an almost Disambiguation be a specifically Baltimore thing? ;) That side, there is no other Fells Point and Fells is primarily known as "Fells Point" so apostrophe aside, I think that would be the most appropriate place, no? I can provide a ton of sources for the apostrophe issue, though apparently it's deeper than I thought! Praxidicae (talk) 00:39, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's back and forth from what I saw too. The Preservation Society calls it "Fell's", Baltimore's tourist organization calls it "Fell's", yet Live Baltimore calls it "Fells". Confusing to say the least. RickinBaltimore (talk) 00:43, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support a move to Fells Point, Baltimore, as it looks like the majority of sources do not use the apostrophe. Bradv🍁 16:04, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am more familiar with the non-apostrophized spelling myself, but as @RickinBaltimore:noted, both are seen. I think the bigger issue is the article is not self-consistent about it. Even within the lede, both spellings are used. @Bradv: proposed a survey of major sources to see what is the majority usage - can we agree that would be a reasonable way to find consensus? @Praxidicae: Sauzer (talk) 13:01, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Returning to this thread two years on, I still feel merely "Fells Point" is the dominant usage outside of the pointed difference of the historic society. The un-apostrophized spelling is long-standing and appears in edited sources such as The Sun (here in 1986). At a minimum though, the "Baltimore" part of the title should be considered superfluous. I will likely be wp:bold and make this change in the near future, but wanted to resume this discussion first. Thoughts? Sauzer (talk) 21:43, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
