$vau vs fexprs[edit]

As far as I understand it, $vau expressions are not exactly fexprs, though they are related. It seems fexprs get the actual symbolic representation of an expression, but $vau "operatives" get opaque expression objects. John Shutt's thesis "Fexprs as the basis of Lisp function application" discusses the theoretical issues with fexprs and how $vau improves them.
