Irish soldiers?

[edit]

Hi, I see you are using a lot of references on Military and Naval history and with a keen interest in the Napoleonic wars and the French Revolutionary wars. I'm writing a dissertation on the Martello Towers in Cork harbour and thus would be interested in Hoche's and Humbert's expeditions to Ireland and I would be particularly interested to know whether they used Irish soldiers seeing that the French had a lot of Irish soldiers in their regiments and they would be ideally suited for an invasion of Ireland. All I have found so far is evidence of the leaders of the United Irishmen partaking but little is known about the regular soldiers. Given that they expected the Irish population to rise after the French landed I would expect they would use the Irish regiments that had proven themselves already as capable fighters to invade Ireland and thus gain more support for the conquest of Ireland. After all a foreign invasion force is always subject to the will of the people whereas an Irish force would win over the Irish population more easily.

Your thoughts please and references and/or sources if possible. --Jorgenpfhartogs (talk) 13:04, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
