"Fake news" in lead

[edit]

There has been a long-term edit war over a sourced sentence in the lead that states that Bakshi "has promoted fake news and misinformation on a number of occasions". I was one of the editors removing it, and I removed it for the following reasons:

  • Per MOS:BLPLEAD, the claim does not reflect the entirety of the article as there is no content in the body that makes any mention of it.
  • This source fact-checks a statement Bakshi made about a Nov 2014 incident and concludes that the claim is false. The second source states "responsible for spreading the fake news" about the same statement that the first one fact-checked. One statement that was found to be untrue is not "on a number of occasions", so the content misrepresented the sources.
  • That second source also points out "Five decades, an illustrious career in the army, a PhD in military history, and two grandkids later" and "Bakshi has seen more war, insurgency and terrorism than even an average Armyman — he was at the China front during 1971, in Punjab at the height of militancy in 1985, Kaksar in Kargil in 1987, Kishtwar, J&K, in 2000. His war-time experience has earned him both the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal for his service." The lead fails to summarize that 50-year-career, yet criticism over a single statement was shoehorned into it, which is WP:UNDUE even if it been supported in the body.

I have not edited the article since because of its contentious nature. It is a poor BLP and some of the editors regularly editing it appear to be emotionally invested in the topic. However, since there is a brief reprieve of full protection, I hope editors will use this time to discuss the content and reach consensus on a WP:NPOV lead. I will not be watching this article or engaging further in the discussion. Schazjmd (talk) 14:05, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"on a number of occasions" makes sense since The Print has provided examples of misinformation spread by Bakshi with regards to history under the same section about "The PhD in military history or purveyor of ‘fake news’". Examples: 1) "Bakshi then goes on to explain that after studying the Transfer of Power Archives in London, he was shocked to learn that a letter signed by the Viceroy of India..." 2) "INA, which he once told Republic World, “was really responsible for forcing the British to leave”. 3) "Of 60,000 INA soldiers, 26,000 were martyred. They may have lost the battles of Imphal and Kohima but they won the war for independence..."
Anyone who has little understanding of Subhas Chandra Bose will know these claims by Bakshi are nothing but outright misinformation. Such claims by Bakshi were specifically fact-checked and debunked here.
Some more examples of fake news: [1][2]
On "Contoversy" section, we can add:

"Bakshi has promoted fake news and misinformation on multiple occasions.[1][2] In 2019, he wrongly claimed that a army man was jailed in Tihar following 2014 Budgam firing, and Mehbooba Mufti as CM had ordered no checking of vehicles. Fact checkers found these claims to be false because Mufti was not a CM at that time and there is no evidence of such an order that prevented checking of vehicles. Lt Gen Deependra Singh Hooda rejected the claim that a army man was jailed after Budgam firing.[1]

Bakshi has claimed that more than Quit India Movement, it was Indian National Army (INA) who was responsible in bringing independence to India. Bakshi depends on flawed arguments not supported by academic literature while making these claims.[3] The Print cites his position as a trustee in Netaji Bose INA Trust as one of the reason to downplay Quit India Movement.[2]

In 2021, Bakshi shared images to claim that Pakistani soldiers were killed in Panjshir conflict. This claim was debunked by fact checkers who found the images falsely claimed Pakistani actors working in a military-themed film to be actual soldiers.[4][5]"

I will add more to above proposal soon. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 14:49, 6 April 2023 (UTC)proposal completed Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 05:10, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What's the 2014 Budgam firing? What's a CM? Shouldn't you Wikilink Deependra Singh Hooda? This is a worldwide encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 04:40, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any suggested edits to improve the neutrality of the article? That's a core content policy, after all. Cullen328 (talk) 04:46, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is Budgam firing. Yes I was not aware that a page for Deependra Singh Hooda exist. Let me know what are the current issues with neutrality of the article currently. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 05:10, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the proposed text.
For lead, I think it will be best to do RfC to finalize a lead.
@Girth Summit: Re: this removal. Can you also remove the remaining text from "Retirement" section? It is unsourced and we should not keep unsourced info on BLP. Thanks Abhishek0831996 (talk) 15:05, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done - that text was also added by a sock. Girth Summit (blether) 17:09, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
