Proposed merge with Gabriele Kelm

MisterSynergy, I suspect that her maiden name is Kelm and that Gabriele Kelm is thus the same person. The reason I say that is that six of the GDR women's eight were awarded a Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for winning gold three times in succession (1968–1970), and Rotermund was one of the six. Problem is that she doesn't show up in the result list for 1968 and 1969. Here's what it says in the Berliner Zeitung on 19 September 1970 (in German):

Die Europameister im Rudern im Achter 1968, 1969 und 1970: Gudrun Apelt, Barbara Behrend, Marita Berndt, Renate Boesler, Gabriele Rotermund, Renate Schlenzig.

Of those, Behrend and Berndt weren't in the 1968 eight; that year they won bronze with the coxed four instead. Everyone else rowed in all three years apart from "Gabriele Rotermund", who was part of the team in 1970 only. There was, however, a "Gabriele Kelm" part of the 1968 and 1969 gold-winning team. I've cross-checked the names on newspapers held by the Berlin State Library and the pages of the Rüsselsheimer Ruder-Klub and there isn't any crossover; Kelm was active until 1969 and Rotermund first appeared in 1970.

Based on the above, do you think it's appropriate to merge the two articles? Schwede66 22:24, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Difficult to say. Did you see this BZ article about the 1970 ERCH? "Allerdings sitzen im Achter vier EM-Erstlinge: Rosel Nitsche, Uta Marten (beide SC DHfK Leipzig) Christa Staack und Gabriele Rotermund (beide SC Dynamo)." Either the newspaper didn't know about the marriage as well, or both persons rare not identical. —MisterSynergy (talk) 05:27, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I did see that article but hadn't read it up to that point. A surprising statement that doesn't align with the above, and given that much of the rowing reporting came from Waldemar Sydow he should have been in the know. Then again, the women didn't get much attention by the print media at the time so maybe he simply didn't know her. Having checked, I note that Kelm and Rotermund both rowed for SC Dynamo Berlin. Maybe I'll track down rowers from that club on social media and ask them. I'll put a merge tag on the article as that may result in somebody coming to the talk page who can enlighten us. @Schwede66: Any luck with the social media approach? Given the lack of certainty, perhaps we should close the merge, but link with see also; that alone might be sufficient to prompt anyone in-the-know to act/comment. Klbrain (talk) 05:06, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

To clarify: my point is that the merge proposal is stale (no discussion in more than a year), the case is ambiguous (we're not sure that they're the same person), and hence the proposal should be closed. Nevertheless, it is worth linking the pages so that in the longer term the potential association isn't missed. Klbrain (talk) 05:48, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
