Township of Bagot and Blythfield

[edit]

The history of the Township of Bagot and Blythfield could be added to this article if someone local had published sources unavailable to those of us living farther away. The national government has unfortunately merged its records under the amalgamated entity, so information particular to the unified township is sparse.

  • A World War I monument was erected by the Township's Centennial Committee in 1967, indicating that Bagot and Blythfield had its origins in 1867, but that is also the anniversary of the establishment of Parliament under the British North America Act of 1867.
  • The Township appears in the 1871 Census as a Subdistrict of District No 81 South Renfrew, under Province of Ontario. Renfrew South was a federal riding established in 1867 under the BNA Act of 1867. The census shows a unified township but the Wikipedia article on the BNA Act of 1867 shows Bagot and Blythfield as individual municipalities.
  • Bagot and Blythfield first appears as a Township in Jan 1912 in Newspapers.com.

Best I can determine, the unified township existed from 1867 to 2001, when it was amalgamated with other towns into Greater Madawaska. Since all of the above is original research, I can't edit the Greater Madawaska article to include this history of one of its components. These details are are hard to find and helpful to genealogists trying to properly represent governmental nomenclature as of particular dates and times. I've run into the same problem in the case of other amalgamations. The components are often not even posed as redirects. Pnoble805 (talk) 15:51, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
