The 2001 Australian Census showed 375.701 Greeks in all of Australia and the the 2006 Census 365.195, so where are the 600.000 to 700.000 Greeks? This was an urban myth created by local Greek community leaders to extract funding from the Greek Government, Melbourne is not the 3rd largest Greek city.According to the 2006 ABS Australian Census its population is 149.000. Athens, Thessaloniki, Piraeus, Patra, Nicosia and Lemesos(Cyprus) have higher numbers (See world Gazetteer 2010 population statistics)

7 largest?

Greek Australian is the seventh largest ethnic group in Australia - is this correct, or are Greek Australians higher (at 5th or 6th)? I'm asking this because on "Croatian Australian", it says Croatian Australians are the 7th largest; and if that's true, then Greek Australians must be at 5th or 6th because there are more Greek Australians than Croatian Australians. —KingIvan 08:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

"Melbourne the second largest Greek city"

The ABS said there were 365,000 odd persons claiming Greek ancestry, and 250,000 Greek speakers, in Australia. So I have no idea where the figure of 600,000 Greek Melburnians in the cited source came from.

It could well be that Melbourne has a population larger than the third largest Greek city (Piraeus, population 170,715) - see List of cities in Greece. But I would want confirmation that other cities with large Greek populations - Montreal, Paris or Munich etc. I note that in 2000 there were 159,763 Greek Americans in New York state (see Greek American). It may be harder to compare countries as Australia records ancestry while other countries don't, and if country of birth data was used Melbourne would probably have fewer than those European cities with a large transient Greek population. 2011 census results:

Greek population metro Melbourne - 155,000---- Greek population metro New York - 175,000

Notables as a stand alone list?

The entire article is very heavy on notable Australian Greeks. I would suggest that a separate list article with the WP:TITLE of List of Australian Greeks be created as there are more than an ample number to justify such a list. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 00:02, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Forgot my username!

All recent edits by this user 14.202.213.20 was done by me (User:CostaD98) but i stupidly kept forgetting to log in. I think my hard efforts should be recognised still quite anonymously as just having a not-so-informative username displayed. I just want to verify that the Cypriot statistics were done via the 2016 Australian census tablebuilder and I did my own research on trying to find the number of Greeks who live in the cities mainly from the 2016 census. I am an Australian born of Greek (Greece) descent. I like researching on the Greeks in Australia among other things! Just pissed me off after 6 hours and a lot of prior research, to realise that I didn't log in. Other websites I edited were "Greek Diaspora", "Greek Cypriots" and "Cypriot Australians". Also the Vlachs are an ethnic group from mountainous Greece and some from southern Romania. Hi, CostaD98. I've verified your refs, and expanded the citations. The only amendment I made was to the 600,000 to 700,000 thousand as the source only stated more than 600,000 persons (ergo the change to 600,000+ as the higher estimate for those of Greek descent and born in Greece). There are some websites like the Greek Reporter that cites 700,000 too but i think they are way over the current Greek popularion in Australia. the way you've written it as 600,000+ looks much nicer anyway. 88% of greek Australians can speak Greek

This is completely wrong. I checked the SBS source it’s referring to and it doesn’t say that. As a Greek Australian who speaks fluent greek and used to teach Greek, I can guarantee that the amount of greek Australians who speak Greek varies wildly by where they were born and also where their parents were born. Greeks born in Australia to migrant parents , maybe 1% can speak Greek and Greek Australians born to Greek Australian parents maybe it’s 0.1% who can speak Greek but that’s probably generous .
