"She was paid off at the Chatham dockyards" may mean something to people who know about ships, but I would certainly like to know what it means. I "pay off" a mortgage, but generally the location of that "payoff" is not significant, so I assume this has some additional maritime meaning. Thank you for any clarification. "Paid off" means "decommissioned". Kafziel Complaint Department: Please take a number 01:38, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In fact "paid off" originally referred to a ship's crew or company being given their final pay once they were no longer required by the ship owner, e.g., as Kafziel states, because the ship was decommissioned by the navy, or was perhaps due to be "laid up" (not to be used for a period with only a "skeleton crew" to maintain her) or more often, to be sent for "breaking" or other disposal.
The location (Chatham dockyards) is significant as that was where the ship's life as an active naval vessel effectively ended. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.31.130.124 (talk) 09:05, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
