"Puppet Convention"

[edit]

I keep seeing the claim on various Wiki pages that "Lyon then convened a puppet constitutional convention in the state capital" without any references cited. It is non-neutral in nature and it might be more appropriate to stick to the actions taken by a given body on given dates. The assertion that Lyon was the one pulling all the strings appears dubious and unsupported. (Lyon's political allies in Missouri perhaps had great influence in this, but Lyon himself? Unlikely.) The narratives I've seen indicate that the executive committee of the elected state convention called the delegates back. This was within their charter (the convention had not been dissolved.) The state convention then declared the state offices vacant, and set up a provisional government. While the latter actions apparently exceeded their authority, the governor and legislators had also exceeded theirs as well and were at the time in open rebellion. It was an extraordinary set of circumstances. Red Harvest (talk) 16:51, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
