lemma not helpful, content poor
[edit]The lemma "Heligoland-Zanzibar treaty" is besides the point. This was not the name of the agreement, even it it has been called this way.
"Vertrag zwischen Deutschland und England über die Kolonien und Helgoland vom 1. Juli 1890" (=Treaty between Germany and England about the colonies and Heligoland) is a correct German name, in the text itself we can see "agreement after deliberating on various issues pertaining to the colonial interests of Germany and Great Britain".
Heligoland was a side topic. The point was to agree on demarcation of zones of interest in Africa in ordre to avoid competiton and clashes in the colonies. Moreover "Heligoland-Zanzibar treaty" gives the impression as if claims to these two islands have been exchanged. That was in fact the criticism by German nationalists at that time. But that had no base in reality. The British gave up the island of Heligoland whcih they had in reality, the Germans gave up the protectorate over Witu which they had acquired on paper so far. And they gave up claims from agreements which had so far not yet materialzed about Zanzibar and Uganda. The articles reflects very little of the content. The text is available in English here: http://germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org/sub_document.cfm?document_id=782 (obvious typo on page 2: it shows "In Southwest Africa, Great Britain's sphere of influence is demarcated thus" where it must be "In East Arica...")
