[edit]

I'm not convinced this needs to be its own article. "Himalayan Buddhism" as conceived here doesn't include all Buddhism in the Himalayas (Newar, Nepalese Theravada), nor does it include everything in the Tibetan Buddhism family (Mongolia). So as a category it is fairly useless.Sylvain1972 (talk) 17:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The term "Himalayan-Buddhism" (/ "Trans-Himalayan Buddhism" / "Himalayan Buddhist") is found in many academic and other publications. There are several academic courses in "Himalayan Buddhism" and "Himalayan Buddhist-Art" (as well as being included in the broader category Himalayan Studies). The term does include Newar Buddhism (and Buddhism traditions of the Tamang, Lepchas, etc. which are often quite different from those of Tibet) - but rarely seems to include Nepalese, or Ladakhi, Theravada ~ probably because the Theravada tradition is a relatively recent arrival in Nepal and Ladakh and is usually not regarded as part of traditional Himalayan culture. The term Himalayan Buddhism is also preferred in places like Bhutan, and amongst various ethnic groups of the Himalayas, where the people do not regard themselves and their religion as "Tibetan". I'm not sure why the term should include Mongolian Buddhism, which has some unique elements of its own. Categories frequently have overlapping areas, they don't need to be separate compartments.
