One Sorry History Article

[edit]

Just an observation: I was redirected to this page from the main Denver Broncos article because it said there was a more detailed history of the team here. What bosh! Except for a few comments on the pre-Elway era, and the scores from a couple of games, there is virtually nothing on the early 1960s and 1970s history of the team. It doesn't even start with the founding of the team! It starts with a brief mention of the 1967 Detroit game. After that it's all Elway and the Broncos of the Super Bowl 1980s and 1990s, exactly what one finds in the main Denver Broncos article. In fact, much of what one finds here is cut-and-pasted from that article. If there's going to be a separate "history" article, then make it a true and detailed history article. Right now, I'd say this thing could be merged with the main Denver Broncos article with no loss at all. And just to pre-empt the inevitable "then why not fix it yourself response," if I were the expert, I would. StudierMalMarburg 20:08, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you... if anyone wants to write that, I'd welcome them to. 75.70.123.215 (talk) 01:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is sad isn't it? 71.196.240.75 (talk) 06:52, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is a mess -- I'll try to make some improvements.Johnelwayrules (talk) 02:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two 2005 seasons!

[edit]

The section on the 2005 season was shown twice for some reason. Removed the redundant section. 75.70.123.215 (talk) 01:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To Do-List for this article

[edit]

This article needs:

  • Better and more references

:Some of this stuff I know is true, but does not have a verifiable reference - i.e., SB 24 most lopsided in history

Some of this stuff has a reference, but could use a more decisive reference -- i.e., the Three Amigos - their existence verified by the article, but the article is not really about them
  • A more thorough discussion of the 1960s and 1970s, hopefully by someone with knowledge of that era
  • A discussion (perhaps incorporated throughout the article) of the team's ownership, including the mid-1960s crisis and perhaps the recent lawsuit
  • A discussion of the home sell-out streak and perhaps some of the controversies surrounding it
http://www.profootballhof.com/history/team.jsp?franchise_id=10
  • A discussion of the term “Broncomania” and its use in various eras
  • A discussion of the new stadium – the end of the old Mile High, naming and financing issues, etc.
  • A discussion of the controversies surrounding the use of chop blocking

  • Some articles on the Leprechaun (he seems notable, at least for a mention):

  • Some clarity is required re: what is appropriate to this article and what is appropriate to the Denver Broncos article – for example, should the Forbes assessment of the team’s value be here or there?

Facts removed from article pending citation:

[edit]
  • They were named that after the wild horses that lived in Colorado. [citation needed]

*Denver, in fact, came close to losing its franchise in 1965, but a local ownership group took control that year and began to build the team. [citation needed]

  • In 1967, under head coach Lou Saban, Denver took the field with almost two dozen rookies on its roster; though Saban's tenure was unsuccessful, it set the stage for later successes. [citation needed]
  • Not only was that the Broncos' first winning season; they were in playoff chase as well, with only a loss to the powerful Oakland Raiders in the last game of the season (that NBC chose to televise nationally) that kept them out of the playoffs. [citation needed]
  • Ralston coached the team until 1976, when well-publicized clashes between Ralston and his players led to Ralston's removal. [citation needed]
  • Prior to 1977 season, Denver had received very little national attention and was rarely featured on nationally televised games. [citation needed]
  • Not only was that the Broncos' first winning season; they were in playoff chase as well, with only a loss to the powerful Oakland Raiders in the last game of the season that kept them out of the playoffs. [citation needed]

Origin of nickname

[edit]

Never mind the lack of reference for the Broncos being named for wild horses that lived in Colorado -- it's probably not even true. The more likely source of the name would be bucking broncos at the National Western Stock Show rodeo in Denver, although I have no citation for this interpretation either.

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:History of the Denver Broncos/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Most importantly it needs expansion. I also needs references (preferably inline citations), lead needs expansion (see WP:LEAD), and some fair use acceptable pics (free ones are ideal of course). Also has some formatting issues see History of the New York Giants for an example of a good article on the subject. Quadzilla99 02:13, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Team Records section

[edit]

What would be appropriate for the Team Records section. It seems to be only specific to this particular doc and maybe one or two other History of (NFL Team) articles. Should it become a habit to add these to the other History of (NFL Team) docs, or remove it to keep consistency? I was considering adding this section to other docs in this category but would need input. Techie234 (talk) 14:21, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
