Studied under Stockhausen

[edit]

This edit questioned where exactly Schmidt studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen. From Schmidt's biography (helpfully linked above): "1964–1966: Musikhochschule Köln: Kölner Kurse für Neue Musik: Komposition (K.H.[sic] Stockhausen, […]".

I think that is not quite right. The "Kölner Kurse für Neue Musik" were established at the "Rheinische Musikschule" which is an institution run by the City of Cologne and separate from the "Hochschule für Musik Köln"; I gleaned this information from this obituary. A detailed account of the history is in Michael Custodis: Die soziale Isolation der neuen Musik: zum Kölner Musikleben nach 1945, p. 137ff. Volume 54 of Beihefte zum Archiv für Musikwissenschaft, ISBN 9783515083751.

A more correct wording of the article's sentence might be:

"… and he studied composition in Karlheinz Stockhausen's Kölner Kurse für Neue Musik at the Rheinische Musikschule, Cologne."

Yes, this was exactly my understanding of when and where Irmin Schmidt studied with Stockhausen. The only change I might suggest is that the title of the courses be translated into English: "Cologne Courses for New Music". The dates did not match Stockhausen's period of appointment at the Musikhochschule, not did it seem likely that Schmidt would have returned to study again with Stockhausen three or more years after co-founding Can. Another source is the lists of participants in the Cologne Courses, found in Stockhausen's Texte III, pp. 196–211, where he is found for the Third Cologne Courses, 1 October 1965 to 1 April 1966, but not for the Second Courses in 1964–65. Schmidt's Can colleague, Holger Czukay, is listed for the First (1963), Second, and Third Courses, but under the name Holger Schüring.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 15:52, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interview

[edit]

This interview from early December 2013 is probably of not much value for most readers of this article, but on this talk page, interested readers might find it quite informative.

One of the unexpected revelations is Schmidt's account of what Stockhausen told him about the fate of the original tape of Telemusik (KHS accidentally destroyed it). -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 11:51, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
