What is Japanese Mahjong?

I found this article through a link in the Saki (manga) article about rinshan kaihou. This article about yaku links to the Mahjong article, but not vice versa. Instead, the Mahjong article only has a sentence or two of it in its variations section. It doesn't say enough. Can you guys please just put up even an itsy-bitsy article about Japanese mahjong and link this article to it? Alphapeta (talk) 00:46, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Description
A hand composed of seven pairs is considered a valid hand in Japanese mahjong. It is one of only two hands that are an exception to the rule requiring winning hands to have four groups and one pair (the other being thirteen orphans). It also has its own special rules for scoring.

Most Japanese play with the rule that all seven pairs must be unique. In other words, if a hand contains four red dragons and five other independent pairs, the four red dragons may not be split into two pairs to make a seven pairs hand.

Improving the Tables

One way to improve the tables: having a bunch of them merged toegether as one table within the different sections. in the end, they could look like this: NFL_Top_10. The different Yaku can be separated by a colored line, instead of repeated table titles for each yaku. At this point, the tables themselves look cluttered because of it. Special hands i saw at japanese scenes

those hand i saw didn't acculimate the yaku system: there are so many, such as: Yaku list

  1. 3 chained triplets(三連刻): 3 triplets of same hands (for example, 333444555) (worth 2 fan)
  2. Small chain(小连七对): 7 pairs (can wit for ryanpeikou) + single suit hand + menzen (4 fan)
  3. Red simples(断紅和): 248 circles, 23468 green, any honors except red dragon. (menzen 3 fan, non-menzen 2 fan)
  4. Pure Red Simples (清断紅):Same as red simples, but no honors, add 3 fan to the usual Red Simples)
  5. 1 suit of 3 simillar straights(一色三順): 3 same straights of same suit. (may also be count with 3 chained triplets, worth 2 fan)
  6. 3 opposing winds(客風三刻): 3 wind triplets, must not be their own wind seat. (example: if WS is north, then any north wind triplets would nullfy 3 opposing winds (三風刻).) (worth 3 fan)
  7. 4 Honors triplets(四字刻): all 4 honor triplets plus non-honor pair. (worth at least 6 fan, because of All triplets and half-flush)
  8. 5 styles(五門斉): all 5 styles of hand. worth 1 fan
  9. Contious Kong mix(连开花): 2 or more kongs formed, then tsumo. worth at least 2 fan due to 2 times Rinshan Kaiho.
  10. 3 dragon pairs(三元七対子): 7 pairs consist of 3 dragons. worth 1 fan
  11. 4 wind pairs(四喜七対子): 7 pairs consist of 4 winds. worth 1 fan
  12. Same IIpeikou(清盃口): Ryanpeikoh of 2 same straights. (like 223344 and 223344) worth at least 3 fan and must be concealed
  13. 2 dragon snatching pearl(双竜争珠): any constructive 6 straight of characters and bamboos (like 234567 of 2 kinds), plus any circle pairs. worth 4 fan and must be concealed. if circle pair is a 5, then this is worth a yakuman.
  14. Mirror straights(鏡同和): 2 simillar straights of different suits. worth 2 fan for menzen, 1 fan if not menzen..
  15. Mirror triplets(二同刻): 2 simillar triplets of different suits. worth 2 fan.
  16. Bullseye straight(五心通貫): Straight through with a wait of 5. add 1 fan on straight trought
  17. mixed trough(三色通貫): 3 suits of straights with 123, 456 and 789. Menzen 2 fan, non-menzen 1 fan. if waiting for single wait of making pair, add one fan only when in menzen (単竜).
  18. 3 colored chained triplets(三色連刻): see 3 chained triplets, worth 2 fan
  19. Top 3 triplets(頂三刻): 159 of triplets and straights. worth 2 fan
  20. Jumping 3 triplets(跳牌刻): 135/246/357/468/579 of triplets and straights. worth 2 fan
  21. Muscular 3 triplets(筋牌刻): 147/258/369 of triplets and straights. worth 2 fan

Yakuman list

  1. 4 chained triplets(四連刻): 4 triplets of 4 steps of same hand (etc: 222333444555)
  2. Red Peacock(紅孔雀): 1,5,7,9 bamboo + red dragon
  3. Partially Green-red(紅一点/一点紅(いってんこう)/万緑叢中紅一点/万緑叢中一点紅): All green, but green dragon was replaced with red dragon.
  4. Green Wheel(緑一色輪): All green + 5 bamboo. can also make 7 pair.
  5. All black(黒一色): 248 circles, plus any wind triplets and/or pair
  6. Millionaire's stone(百万石): Character suit hand + number more than 100.
  7. 1 suit of 4 simillar straights(一色四順): 4 same straights of same suits, must not be kong before that.
  8. 13 different tiles(十三不塔): Tenho + first draw with 13 tiles and 1 pair (can also go to 14 tiles if lucky(十三無靠))
  9. 7 Different Stars(七星無靠): all honors of different sets, and 147 Characters, 258 Circles and 369 Bamboos of any 6 tiles.
  10. Windy flower of Snowy Moon:(風花雪月) 4 triplets needed: any wind triplets, 5 circles, white dragon and 1 circle.
  11. Flowerbird of windy night(花鳥風月): 4 triplets needed: any wind triplets, 5 circles, 1 circles and 1 bamboo.
  12. Northeastern Line(東北新幹線): Straight trough + North and east triplet/pair
  13. Northeastern train(東北自動車道): 246 circles + North and east triplet/pair
  14. Northsouth war(南北戦争): 1115668 of any suit, plus North and south triplet/pair
  15. Big bridge(金門橋/一色四步高): 4 step straights from Guobiao Mahjong
  16. Green Caverns(青ノ洞門): 248 circles + green dragon + any wind Triplets and/or pair
  17. 8th dealer streak(八連荘): Obviously, Honba is 8+ to conceade a Yakuman.
  18. All Red users(十三红): All characters, 35679 Circles, 1579 Bamboos red dragon of any 13 tiles plus one pair. (See 13 orphans)
  19. All non-red users(十三断红): 1248 Circles, 23468 Bamboos, 4 winds and Green/White dragons (No 13 wait plus 1 pair, unlike 13 orphans, 13 Different tiles, All red users). However Circles and bamboos are necessary to make All non-red

Other Useful hands that is not verfied under Japanese Law:

  1. Lesser Limits (真似満): Use to discard simillar tiles by both dealer and non-dealer (in case if user is dealer) Hand is nullfied if non-menzen, which was also identical to Nagashi Mangan (all Terminal/Honor discard), May be worth a haneman.
  2. Kong Faker(槓振り): Worth one han, Use to ron hand with the use of kong.
  3. First turn Rinshan(頭槓和): Rinshan Kaiho in first round, also mixed with Chiho only. But incase of failure in Renho setting, it is worth the original 2 fan minimum (Rinshan + Menzen Tsumo)
  4. Last Turn Konging(海底抢杠): Rinshan Kaiho + Haitei Laoyue. A Chankan also work. Worth a mangan.
  5. Twelve Mysteries(十二落抬/全求人/半求人): Was simillar to all exposure, and all 4 melds opened (Concealed Kongs not effective). Must be non-menzen for rules. However, When you Tsumo, It became Partical Exposure. Worth 1 fan.
  6. Open 9 Gates(食い下九蓮宝燈): Opened 9 gates of open hand 1112345678999, which expolts the original rule of Chunrei Poto.

Tiles used for comboing mangan:

  1. Using 5 circles to rinshan kaiho (五筒开花)
  2. Using 2 bamboos to chankan (二索抢杠)
  3. Using 1 circles to Haitei (一筒摸月)
  4. Using 9 circles to Hotei (九筒捞鱼)
  5. Chicken's last stand: Use 1 bamboo to do a single wait. (金鶏独立)
  6. Snow Cap: Use White dragon to do a single wait. (独釣寒江雪)

Hands Other than the standard Chunrei Pooto:

  • This hands make a wait of 7 to 8 waits for the gates hands to make effective, and as always must be menzen Worth a Baiman and Sanbaiman respecitvely.
  1. 7 Gates (七連宝燈), 2 such possible sequence like 2344445666678, 2333345677778, 2233445566777
  2. 8 Gates (八連宝燈), more than 10 such possible sequence like 1233334567888, 2333344567888, 2223456777789, 2223456677778, 1112345666678, 2344445678999, 1112223456777, 2223334567888, 3334445678999, 3334567888999, 2223456777888, 1112345666777

Optional Hands

This is an optional rule to rīchi. A player may reveal the needed waiting tiles when declaring ready. In doing so, an extra han is awarded to the normal ready or double ready hand. Yakuman is awarded to winning it on a discard unless the discarder already declared ready and had no choice of discarding. Some rules say the "double revealed" ready hand has four han.[1]

A hand of seven pairs that are sequential, the same suit, and consist of only simple tiles (numbers 2 through 8). This hand is often recognized only if it is made by a suit of pinzu (筒子; circles, coins) since the Japanese name of the hand means big wheels. Some rules do not apply yakuman to the hand, in which case it has 11 han (chin'itsu, ryanpeikō, tan'yao, and pinfu).

It is noted that the hand can be recognized as a pinfu hand and always has multiple waits whatever the winning tile may be. Some of its waits lose some yaku and thus decrease the value. For example, when the hand waits 7, it also waits 1 and 4.

As for other suits, the hand is called bamboo forest (大竹林, dai chikurin) for bamboos and numerous neighbours (大数隣, dai sūrin) for characters.

Eight consecutive winnings pārenchan – 八連荘 Limit Dealer only
A player wins eight times consecutively. The conditions of the hand depend on rules. The ninth and following winnings are often yakuman again, while some rules say the sixteenth is the next yakuman. It has nothing to do with the number of counters because the number increases when a hand is a draw. In some rules, no other yaku is necessary in the eighth winning. Some say the player must be a dealer from the first time. The player is always a dealer when the hand is accomplished. The hand is often optional.[2]

Under the Riichi section

While it is one of the most important elements of the game, indications of when a round rotates is irrelevant. That's all due to any player can declare riichi at any time (even for the purpose of a deliberate chombo). Relevance falls under the conditions of a riichi declaration itself. Game Rounds

To be clear on the meaning of a "round", this includes honba. Meaning, if the player sitting East happens to win, then the player has won East-0. The next round would then be East-1. This means, a "ren-chan" is a round. A "han-chan" is also a round. A "honba" is also a round. Obviously, as any of us who plays this game, there is a huge difference in the multiple types of "rounds". This difficultly stems on the transition from Japanese terminology to English. At the same time, as noted above, the less "jargon" used; the better. These articles have to be designed for those, who have never even heard of this game. Standard

I think the standard yaku and local variations should be separated. 1996 Shin-Hochi rule is usually considered standard in Japan (ISBN 978-4831901187). The rule only allows 38 yaku, and following are not part of the standard.

  • 人和
  • 八連荘

Error in the definition of Two sets of identical sequences?

I think there could be an error or a lack of clearness in the definition of the hand named ″Two sets of identical sequences″. In its text and illustration it seems that the hand requires two sets (of sequences) that match numerically, besides the sequences in every set themselves matching numerically. In just about any other independent source I have have checked, it seems that the pattern 789-789, 345-345 would be accepted as a legitimate occurrence, but in this article one gets the impression that both of these identical sequences must match, that is, 789-789 (in one suit), 789-789 (in another suit). The sources that voice the same opinion as this wikipedia article seem to have this article as their direct source, since just about all of them have copied the exact wording as this article.

Can someone who is well versed in Japanese mahjong please check this up, and edit accordingly?

Errors in the hands of sankantsu/three quads and suukantsu/four quads?

To my knowledge, the hand shown in the example for three quads is incorrect, in that the hand is already complete before drawing the north wind - it already has 4 completed melds and a pair. The north wind tiles should have already been called as a kan, with the remaining hand having 4 tiles and waiting on a fifth like so:

Three Quads / Three Kan sankantsu – 三槓子 2 Open or Closed
 called: + +
A hand consist of three quads (kan), either closed or open.

(Plus, if you consider that each quad has to be made of 3 tiles that were in the hand prior to calling the quad, and the fourth tile gets replaced by one from the dead wall, then the hand on the current page would have 14 tiles before the draw and 15 after...)

Similarly, the hand for four quads already has 4 melds and a pair before drawing the fourth 2 sou (and, similarly to above, has one too many tiles in the hand). (Because all 4 quad calls have to be made to be in tenpai for this hand, it requires a single tile wait):

Four Quads / Four Kan sūkantsu – 四槓子 Limit Open or Closed
 called: + + +
A hand consisting of four quads, either open or closed. The abortive draw of calling four quads (by multiple players) do not apply under normal rules and play would resume otherwise until a winner is decided or a fifth quad is called.
