Flemish or Belgian?[edit]

This is a point which interests me. The opening paragraph lists van Hoof as Flemish. However, if I understand the correct usage of the word "Flemish," it refers more to the composer's language or ethnicity rather than to his place or country of birth, Belgium.

Flemish IS spoken by people residing in a specific area comprising a region of parts of both Holland and Belgium known as "Flanders," and the speakers are generally known as "Flemings." Nevertheless, the Flemish dialect does radiate out somewhat from the original Flanders district of Holland/Belgium, but this would indicate an ethnicity more than a birthplace. So it would seem that Flemish is spoken in both Holland AND Belgium.

So which should it be? Flemish? Or Belgian? Erzahler (talk) 17:43, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Erzahler, I absolutely agree with you. When I created this article as a stub in 2010 I described van Hoof as Belgian, not Flemish, because that is what the sources stated. It was later changed to Flemish by Ser Amantio di Nicolao. I chose not to fight it at the time as van Hoof is an important figure in the Flemish music movement. However, he was a citizen of Belgium, and really should be described as a Belgian composer with a Flemish language/ethnic background. Incidentally, Category:Flemish composers is incorrectly listed under Category:Composers by nationality, which is not really workable simply because Flanders was always under a larger nation(s) (ie. France, Belgium, the Dutch etc.) That should be changed.4meter4 (talk) 13:46, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@4meter4: Beg pardon? I wasn't the one who changed it to Flemish: it was done in this edit. I agree that to me, it would seem that Belgian makes more sense in the context, but as I am not local to the area I try to tread lightly in such things. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:49, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies, on my mistake. I guess I noticed the change after one of your edits and assumed incorrectly. As usual, assumptions often don't pan out as accurate. Thanks for your input here.4meter4 (talk) 13:54, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@4meter4: Quite alright - no harm, no foul. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:02, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

van/Van[edit]

Belgians spell their tussenvoegsel "Van" with a capital "V" (see also van (Dutch)), so this article ought to be moved to Jef Van Hoof. That will require a WP:RM. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 10:51, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
