Is it just me, or is this article a mostly copy of the original bio from her website? Check http://www.jenniferbatten.com/jbbio.htm

Major Edit

[edit]

Hello all. I'm currently developing the content for a major edit to the Jennifer Batten article. Nothing on it is sourced right now, so that's one thing I'm working on. As well, I'd like to develop sections for her career since she's done considerably more than what is listed right now. In essence, my goal is to create a complete and unified biography of this person with all the proper references and sources. To the greatest extent possible, I will use what is already in the article, but if I can't tie it to a reference, that may not be possible. I'm also working on trying to find pictures to add, but I'm not particularly clear on Wikipedia's policy on image use at this point. At any rate, the Help pages for Wikipedia note that any major edits should first be proposed on the discussion page for the article. So, that's what I'm doing. No one seems to be working on this article right now, so I don't know how important such communication is. Nonetheless, here it is. Please let me know if there are concerns about this. Otherwise, I'll get on with the work.

Thanks,

I say go for it. Anything's better than how it is right now, or even a while ago when it read even worse (some of the POV stuff added by random editors over the years has been truly horrible). Looking forward to seeing how you do. Also, I would suggest adding something—anything—about her famous two-handed tapping technique, as I think that is what she is best known for. Good luck! OK, I'm going for it. I started with minor edits to the info box today. The actual birthday was listed as the November 28. It is actually November 29. This info was verified by Batten herself. I also removed Doda as an associated act since Batten's involvement there was limited to having recorded a solo on one song. Some of the other information already in the article is proving difficult to verify. Quite a lot of the associated acts are mentioned in various references, but the most complete list is probably the discography on Batten's own website. Is it OK to use that as a reference in this instance? It seems to fall within the guidelines for references, but if there is any problem, I'd appreciate it if one of the editors would let me know. Also, I can find no reference to back up the information on Doda. Every mention I found of it is just a copy of the text of the current Wikipedia article, so unless I can find an independent source, I will leave that out. In fact, I'm basically approaching the current info in the article from the perspective that if I can't find a source to back it up, I'm going to leave it out of the revision. If there is a problem with that, again, please let me know. For anyone interested in seeing the list of references I'm drawing from, they are on my user page. Feel free to have a look at them and let me know if any seem suspicious. Please just don't edit that page. Thanks! Retroversion (talk) 04:44, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On previous occasions I've used artists' official discography pages as a source, and so far nobody's had a problem with it. As far as I know, the only time an artist's website becomes unsuitable for reference purposes is if they're making statements which may be interpreted as POV, contentious or otherwise unverifiable. Batten doesn't really have anything of the sort on her page besides perhaps the string dampener section, which may count as advertising if mentioned in a heavily promotional manner within this article. Thanks for the info and support Mac Dreamstate. One other quick question about sources for whomever might be reading. I know that anything on YouTube is generally not considered to be a reliable source. However, there are two productions on YouTube that are basically interviews with Batten and are professionally produced. They seem like reliable sources to me, but I thought I'd check it out before I used them. Thanks. Retroversion (talk) 20:26, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Again, if the sourced material on YouTube doesn't contain any controversial or disputed statements, it's reasonably safe to use. I once cited an interview from YouTube in which an artist stated their birthname; prior to using this source, I was advised by another editor that this was fine as long as I used Template:Cite video with all the details filled in. Notes on New Information

[edit]

This is just info for anyone who is watching this page. I'm currently trying to add a lot more information to this article, but most of it will happen as a major edit in the near future. In the meantime, I've added a couple of things to the Info box such as "filmmaker" and "visual artist" as these are occupations that Batten also works in. I was concerned that there might be some issue with listing those occupations, though, since the body of the article doesn't mention her work in those areas. So, I wanted to let anyone watching the page know that that text will be added soon. I could add it now, but it wouldn't integrate well with the article as currently written. So, I chose to add the info in the Info box now and will add the body info as I continue to work on the article text. Retroversion (talk) 02:39, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I might do something to pick up the ball here, given the six-year wait for expansion, and may have to contact Batten directly for a few details. Heck, where was she born? what's her middle name? puppies, or kittens? vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, paleo?
Per the previous, though Batten verifiably is a "visual artist" (selling some of her glass work online), "filmmaker" seems too much without mention of completed (or even attempted) projects. Yes, she had a "one-woman multimedia show" to support Whatever, but reference to this (other than her website) is scarce.
Though known almost entirely as a musician, mention of her musicianship (&/or pedagogy) is thin. Batten had three signature-model guitars (Washburn, produced 2000-2004), and used a "personalized" JB-100 for years. She remains listed on the company's site as a Signature Artist (a list presently down to seven names), appearing in China on their behalf October 2015. (In 1997 ads, she previously endorsed the Washburn WM-10.) No info yet as to what Batten plugged the 100's hex pickup (Roland) into. She moved on to other instruments, particularly Variax. Batten participated in the "evolution" of using an attached damper to mute open strings (to "clean up" percussive solo lines) and has an endorsed model on the market
She also toured a 3½-hour seminar, "Jennifer Batten's Self-Empowerment For the Modern Musician Experience."
Anyway, you get the idea.
