change to intro

[edit]

previous paragraph of the intro

Fr John Meyendorff retired as Dean of St Vladimir's Seminary on June 30, 1992, planning to dedicate more time to teaching and writing. Unfortunately, his creative plans were cut short when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to which he succumbed on July 22, 1992.

Creative plans cut short? Was he really diagnosed less than two months before his death, or was he rather retiring in the knowledge of his diagnosis? In my opinion this original intro would require some sort of reference. As the "unfortunately" isn't neutral anyways, I've rephrased it into:

Fr John Meyendorff retired as Dean of St Vladimir's Seminary on June 30, 1992. On July 22, 1992, he died from pancreatic cancer. --Ibn Battuta (talk) 20:40, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was the last Ph.D. student of Fr. Meyendorff. He really was diagnosed six weeks before his death, indeed he was unable to return alive from Canada. He and his most gracious wife owned a house in Princeton, and he intended to retire there and write more. I cannot edit the article, since I am not an independent witness, but I sign on here under my own name (Phalsall - Paul Halsall) and can be sure about this fact since it helped delay my dissertation completion by six years (although I was always slow) - phalsall —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phalsall (talkcontribs) 19:40, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
