Requested move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: song promoted to primary topic. Uncontested and entirely plausible. Favonian (talk) 10:13, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

– The song gives its name to all the uses listed on the dab page, only one of which (the Patti Page album, Just a Closer Walk with Thee (album)) actually has an article; the song's article has many more incoming links than the album article (discounting template transclusions), and, although the traffic counter tool seems to be down right now, I suspect the song gets several times more page visits than the album. The song should be returned to the plain title, with a hatnote pointing to the album & the dab page. ShelfSkewed Talk 05:48, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Addition: The edit counter isn't working for this month's numbers, but I did look at past months. In January & February of this year, the song article got 3300+ page hits, while the album was in single digits.--ShelfSkewed Talk 06:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

History section

[edit]

This section begins with the statement:

The precise author of "A Closer Walk" was unknown until recently.

But it goes on to discuss origins without ever actually identifying this so-called "recently known" author. Could someone who has stewardship of this page please edit as necessary to correct this lack of closure? Ed8r (talk) 14:57, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of "Just A Closer Walk With Thee"

[edit]

In 1925, Bessie Smith recorded a song called "Careless Love." W.C. Handy was credited as the author. The tune is exactly the same as "Just a Closer Walk." When I was growing up in the 40s and 50s near New Orleans, "Careless Love" was called the theme song of Mardi Gras. Later, in the 60s, I heard that "Just a Closer Walk" had become the theme song of Mardi Gras. Since "Closer Walk" was not recorded until 1941, I have to wonder if there is some connection. The lyrics of "Careless Love" are somewhat risqué as were a lot of the early blues songs. Thus, it is no surprise that"Closer Walk" got to be the theme rather than "Careless Love." 136.53.32.78 (talk) 00:10, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
