Rainfall at Kikori[edit]

I notice the Kikori rainfall is stated as only 584 centimeters (230 inches). I do not know where Merriam Webster's Geographical Dictionary, Third Edition (p. 592) got this information, or if the rainfall has changed in any major way in the past 45 years. But I grew up in Kikori, living there from 1964-1969. During this period, it was required as part of our correspondence school program, to record rainfall. I did this regularly over the 5-year period. We annually recorded rainfall ranging from 320 (810cm) to 360 inches (914cm). This is a huge difference. In the 1960s, the official government meterological office reported an average of 300 inches (762). It is true that I lived some 2 miles/3km south of the government office where this was recorded. I wonder if that distance could account for such a difference to the official record, given no great difference in terrain? But either way, the rainfall actually measured in the 1960s at the official station is 130% of the Merriam Webster figures. The rainfall I measured over the 5 years period 1964-69 is on average 140% of the M-W figures. Go figure? Ptilinopus (talk) 02:51, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
