Definition

[edit]

Is labeling always "defining or describing a person in terms of his or her behavior"? This would seem to be contradicted by the later example of labelling someone as "mentally ill". This is describing them in terms of their mental health rather than their behaviour. I will make a suggestion:

Labelling or Labeling (US) is describing somone in a word or short phrase. For example, describing someone who has broken a law as a criminal.

Label

[edit]

Why isn't this sub definition of Label not connected to that page? This article touches on labeling as describing a person yet, it does not talk about the effects of doing so to communicate with others. This articles says nothing about the fact labels are roles within society. I think it should. I would like to add the definition on the label page and link it to this page. I wold also like to add more about how labels affect people and their behavior. They reinforce societal and cultural norms.--Lilmisssponge (talk) 21:54, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Labelling theory

[edit]

Most of this article relates to labelling theory. I think it should possibly be merged with that article. Alternatively, much of the stuff on labelling theory could be cut down and a more general description of labelling could be given. Yaris678 (talk) 18:19, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the idiosyncratic "Therefor" does not appear formally correct which may tend to discredit the article in the view of some readers. Use of the formally correct spelling might be advisable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.182.122.78 (talk) 15:23, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
