Switzerland

[edit]

The possession of up to 10 grams is not punishable anymore in Switzerland, basically through a legal loophole ("legal"). It has been fined with CHF 100 since 2012 but the federal court has ruled in September 2017 that possession of under 10 grams cannot be punished under the current law. Most cantonal police departments have immediately announced to stop fining those quantities. However, consumption of cannabis remains finable ("illegal but decriminalized"). [1][2][3] (all sources in German) [4][5] (English sources but it has to be noted that the reports on the police statements aren't up to date) --Gbuvn (talk) 17:57, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good call, @Gbuvn:; could you use those German sources to add a sentence or two of update to Cannabis_in_Switzerland#Decriminalization? And then we can use that fact/footnote to update this chart page. Thanks! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 09:40, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Illegal drugs, including cannabis have now been decrimnalized in Norway.

[edit]

13th of december a new drug policy was decided in the parliament.

Is this policy fully official, or does it still need to be endorsed by the PM, or anything like that? We just want to make sure it's finalized before we add it here (I've mentioned it at Cannabis in Norway too). But definitely good call on posting the original Norwegian news source; I tried to find one when you made your edits on the main page, but couldn't find anything on English-language media. If you can help us clarify the status of the new rule (final or no?) that would help, and if you have any other good news articles giving the details that would help. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 09:28, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there are any other reliable news sources than the norwegian newspapers. The one i cited (VG) is a very reliable one in Norway, it's the biggest paper in Norway. The content of the articles are primarily that the parliament voted on this reform, wheter or not do decriminalize use of drugs. All the parties voted for, except for two, and thus a majority led to this reform being implemented. The reform itself is based around that the healthcare in Norway will be taking care of the drug abusers, rather than the police.
Other sources:
See, here's my concern: the Adresa article says "Not binding[Ikke forpliktende] - A majority statement in a budget setting expresses the will of the Storting, but it is up to the government whether this will be followed up with legislative changes or reforms." So is it just a recommendation, but needs more action to be made official? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 22:03, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This vote in itself doesn't actually change government policy - it merely expresses Parliaments opinion on the matter - whether the government then implement this policy we shall see (as mentioned in the article they will be going to Portugal in February to further investigate how it has worked there) Guyb123321 (talk) 22:12, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Re-format the chart to better distinguish legal, decriminalized, and medical?

[edit]

I feel the current chart is putting way too much content in the first column, then two columns for laws that generally go along with Use, and then I'm fine having a separate Cultivation column.

The problem is that we're using the yellow color on the Use column to mean many different things: decriminalized, medical, and often unenforced. I think that's limiting our ability to show the differences between countries without having to read the fine print in each column.

Since there is rarely a case where Transport has substantially different laws from Sales/Use, I would suggest eliminating that column entirely, and having the columns being "Personal use", "Medical", "Sale", and "Cultivation". Or something along those lines.

Downsides? I know there are some other-language Wikipedias that copy from our chart, and that could theoretically inconvenience them if they're just copying directly. And there may be non-Wikimedia websites that cull from this with a 'bot and would have to reconfigure to a new chart format (which I submit is their problem, not ours). The map at the top is only loosely based on the chart, so I don't think we're inconveniencing the map folks too much, especially since the map doesn't at all involve medical, so we're actually removing a complicating factor when they read the chart.

Any opinions or suggestions? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 18:41, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

RfC on re-formatting the chart

[edit]

There is a clear consensus to change the chart columns from "Possession, Sale, Transport, Cultivation" to "Recreational, Medical, Cultivation".

Should we change the chart columns from "Possession, Sale, Transport, Cultivation" to "Recreational, Medical, Cultivation"? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 07:43, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a mockup at User:Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney/sandbox that I can paste in here if we get consensus. Take a scroll through and note how the Green jumps out at you, mainly in the Medical column, where before it was obscured by just caveating the first column as Yellow (which could mean Decriminalized, Medical, or Unenforced) so the three-column version boldly shows the nuances. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 08:58, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done I proposed this months ago here, I've proposed it multiple times on WikiProject Cannabis, I've got some initial replies from RfC and all positive, so to heck with it, I'm going to Be Bold and change it, and if anyone gets upset we can always deal with that as it comes. Survey

[edit]
  • Support, the current page lacks the globally very common distinction between Recreational and Medical cannabis, and the Transport column takes up 25% of the chart but seems of dubious utility. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 07:43, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. I agree that transport is of dubious utility (and seems in 99%-100% of the cases in the chart to track "Possession" closely). It also seems that possession for the most part tracks recreational and medical exemptions (as well as decriminalization of recreational possession) - so it would be better served with a split between the two uses. Sale is sometimes different from possession (in decriminalized instances in which sale is still enforced - but possession not) - however it would make sense to address this under the recreational rubric.Icewhiz (talk) 08:42, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The proposed chart not only looks better, but it is also much more relevant to the current environment/pertinent issues surrounding the topic. As far as I know, nobody is talking about the transport of cannabis like they are about the use of it for recreational or medical purposes. The focus of the current debate/discussion, proposed legislation, etc. is on how people should be allowed to use it. Kerdooskis (talk) 19:53, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska

[edit]

It doesn't make much sense that Alaska is highlighted as legal on the map, considering the other US states are not subject to the same individual breakdown of state by state legality. Drawing a dichotomy between Alaska and the mainland US implies that it's illegal in all other states - and also negates the fact that in Alaska, it is still federally illegal.

Seeing as this is by country, Alaska should be changed to red. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.232.198.69 (talk) 09:03, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, I don't see how this map would be better than the previous one. --Gbuvn (talk) 10:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, were the reasons I said not valid? 2A00:23C4:A9:5D00:902B:BA4:2441:9962 (talk) 22:31, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming, you're the same user as above, yes. I just wanted to say that I prefer this map. --Gbuvn (talk) 16:02, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This map, with Alaska represented differently than the other states that have legalized, does not make sense and is not consistent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.191.170.3 (talk) 20:47, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting of table

[edit]

On my current browser (Firefox 59)sorting by "recreational" causes the table to populate with several rows of errors between North Korea and Austria. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antwan718 (talkcontribs) 15:11, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Antwan718: I see what you mean (Firefox 60) but it's not really an "error". Note that between each letter of countries, there's a little row reminding you what each column means. When you sort by Recreational (or anything else really) it sorts all those headings as though they were entries. It's slightly vexing but doesn't really make for any content errors.
Technical people: is there any way to keep the headings from being a sortable item? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 14:18, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
