I chose to describe and categorize this work as an epistolary essay. In the event that someone has a problem with that or thinks that is incorrect, I am opening this discussion. Some sources have referred to it as an "article" instead of an essay, but even that seems wrong, IMO. Viriditas (talk) 00:32, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'll just go with Schuster & Woods (2021), who call it a "fictional letter". Viriditas (talk) 00:48, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I think a fictional letter and an epistolary essay are almost synonymous, except that such an essay can be fictional or non-fictional. The main point is that a letter can be classified as a type of essay. Viriditas (talk) 01:35, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So it looks like the question of whether it is truly an essay or not is somewhat subjective, but it has to meet basic criteria:
  • It has to be persuasive
  • It has to address the subject in greater depth than other types of literature
I think this letter meets that criteria, but I'm opening this up to others in case I'm mistaken. Viriditas (talk) 01:38, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
