Minor changes

[edit]

On the subject of Soujiro's wanderings, Soujiro leaves the Juppongatana, effectively marking the end of the syndicate, and begins his wanderings prior to Shishio's defeat (if you could call it that,) at the hands of Kenshin and Shishio remarks on this much prior to his battle with Kenshin.

Could someone who has access to the original japanese manga add the kanji for the names? I assume Tsukioka has the same surname as Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, but I could be wrong. --YoshoKatana 02:21, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Senkaku

[edit]

shouldn't he be included here

Sojirou later referred to him.

And by the way, was he killed now or not? Evilbu 13:40, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

killed in the anime, not in the manga. Seven 10:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

and what proof do we have in the anime that he was killed? Evilbu 19:29, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Easy, please watch ep.54. Seven 22:17, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The village he was the despot of, in this article has the wrong name its called Shingetsu village in the manga. Could someone fix that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.128.128.217 (talk) 03:16, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Geisha vs Oiran

[edit]

Yumi, a geisha? No way! Geisha are not prostitutes! If Yumi were a geisha, her bow would be on the back. Only a prostitute (high rank or not) would wear her bow on the front. One should be able to tell the difference between the two, before using a term such as geisha. Seven 05:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Shinsengumi and the Mimawarigumi

[edit]

1. The Shinsengumi and the Mimawarigumi were both police forces to protect Kyoto's peace. Seven 05:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2. The Shinsengumi didn't exist when Okita was fifteen. Okita was born in 1842 or 1844 and the Shinsengumi was formed in 1863. Seven 05:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3. The Mimawarigumi was formed in 1864. This would indicate the date of Mimawarigumi member Kiyosato Akira's death to be around April (lunar calendar), 1864. Seven 05:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

4. Migozuchi Haitō-ryū, the standard Shinsengumi style? BIG MISTAKE! The standard Shinsengumi style was called the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu. (Hijikata developed Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu from Tennen-Rishin Ryu.) Seven 03:58, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saito

[edit]

Saito didn't master all the sword techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu and therefore, shouldn't be able to teach the techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu to others without supervision. It's safer to assume that in the Meiji era, Saito couldn't teach his Gatotsu (fictional techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu) to others in the RK universe (since he would not have the proper supervision to do so.) Seven 22:48, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Zeroshiki isn't a technique to catch the enemy by surprise! It's used when there isn't enough space to move (not when all other techniques are failed). Seven 06:27, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shun Ten Satsu

[edit]

In the manga, the Shun Ten Satsu is clearly stated to be faster than the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki. Seven 08:21, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From Vol 16, Act 134

Sanosuke: ...... Kenshin has the advantage in battou-jutsu but Soujirou has the advantage in speed. If he’s up against the combination of Shukuchi and Tenken’s battou-jutsu, Shuntensatsu, then combining godspeed with the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki, instead of waiting there, should make their overall speed ALMOST equal...... The determining factor is now......the technique’s destructive power... Seven 08:46, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, my mistake then. Starone 17:35, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yutaro's Right Arm

[edit]

Later in the anime, Yutarou's right arm is fully healed. At the end of the manga, Yutarou's right arm is healed (not 100% though) and he becomes an assistant instructor (like Yahiko) at the Kamiya Dojo.

There's no indication that he ever becomes left-handed in the anime or in the manga.

From Vol 6, Act 44 Yutarou: IF my right arm’s no good I’ll use my left. (IF his right arm isn't healed, THEN he will use his left arm.) Seven 16:47, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Enishi and Shishio

[edit]

The Enishi and Shishio entries are rather long... should they be made into seperate pages. Enishi is the major villain of the Jinchu/Memory arc with a very long and developed backstory while Shishio is the major villain of the Kyoto arc.

Misao on Template

[edit]

I think that Misao is a distinguishable enough character in the series to be put on the template.

Misao, the adopted grand-daughter of the previous Okashira? There's no indication of that.

From Vol. 11, Act 86

Okina:... the only grand-daughter of the illustrious previous Okashira... Seven 06:30, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't get what you're saying. I was just asking if anyone thinks that Misao should go on the character template considering that she is a major character in the Kyoto arc and reappear later.

I left the message in regard of a recent edit at the bottom of the discussion page. It wasn't a reply to yours. Seven 07:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Misao's DOB

[edit]

Makimachi Misao's DOB: November 1863 (according to Kenshin Kaden)

Therefore, in summer 1878, she's only 14 by western standards and 16 by East Asian age reckoning. Seven 18:24, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Message to an anonymous user regarding Udō Jin-e

[edit]

Udō Jin-e is not the only character that has a decided advantage over Kenshin (in his wanderer personna). In addition, Kaoru isn't saved by Kenshin. She overcomes the Shin no Ippō by herself.

Saito, for example, is another character that has such a deiced advantage over Kenshin.

From Vol 7, Act 52

Kenshin: . . . Udou Jin’eh was twisted from the beginning, but you weren’t. In the days of the Bakumatsu, even though you were vicious, if you fought, it was by a fair and honorable challenge. Attacking an enemy’s friends to scare him, setting your dog on him and using that opening to take hostages--such cheap tricks would have been beneath you.

From Vol 7, Act 53

Saitou (thinking): . . . Since he’s settled here he’s fought Zanza, the Oniwabanshuu, Shinomori Aoshi and Raijuuta all in a short time. He’s learned to accept victory by awakening the strength of the Hitokiri that sleeps inside him. It’s as I thought. When he picks up the sword, although he doesn’t know it --little by little he’s reverting to Hitokiri Battousai.

Kaoru (thinking): It’s the same . . . it’s exactly the same as with Jin’eh . . .

From Vol 7, Act 57

Kenshin: ...But if, as in the fight with Saitou, I have already returned to Battousai . . . In my days here, while my heart was at ease, I felt like I had changed from the Hitokiri to an ordinary swordsman . . . But the fight with Saitou forced me to realize it...

Kaoru: ...No matter how close you were to Battousai, you were still Kenshin! The time with Saitou and the time with Jin’eh were the same!

Kenshin: . . . With Jin’eh, I became Battousai in order to save you, and your voice was able to bring me back. But with Saitou, I became Battousai only for the sake of the duel. Therefore even your voice couldn’t reach me. The difference is crucial. Seven 22:31, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saito Hajime

[edit]

Does anyone else think he deserves a seperate article? Aoshi has his own article and Saito is no less important than Aoshi.

Hmm, I do think Saito deserves a page for himself. He literally has 200% more info then on any other of the minor characters, and his own list of attacks. Anyone up for creating a new page?--Hanaichi 12:15, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, articles for characters based on historical figures are not created separately. There's a Saito Hajime article with a "Saito in fiction" section and the RK version of Saito is included there. Seven 23:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I feel we should make a seperate article(Which I did, but was deleted) as Saito here has perhaps too much information for a minor character, and even has a list of his own techniques. Besides, Saito probably done as much as Aoshi and perhaps more. As for the characters based on historical figures, I probably will do some research and if anything comes up I'll refer here.--Hanaichi 01:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please check the guidelines. I honestly don't believe that articles for characters that were real people should be created separately. Information such as his techniques should be added to the Saito Hajime article (under "Saito in fiction" section.) That's how it's done. Seven 11:52, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I helped re make the Bionicle Wiki after it went down, and I agree with making a page for him. I worked on smaller pages on the Bionicle Wiki, but I'd gladly help make a Saito page. Koji Toa of Ice

However Seven is right, fictional character articles based on real characters aren't seperated from the real character. Lets just keep it here.--Hanaichi 02:59, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bandaged guy

[edit]

What is the name of the bandaged up guy? All I remember about him is he was burned somehow, and is some major opponent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aburame66745 (talkcontribs) 01:33, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

His name is Shishio.--Hanaichi 13:04, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Raijuta.JPG

[edit]

Image:Raijuta.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Improving character articles - PLEASE use Watsuki's "The Secret Life of Characters"

[edit]

Those of you notice that Watsuki discusses creation of characters, right?

PLEASE use those tidbits to source info about characters! They make articles better! WhisperToMe (talk) 00:10, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On Katsura Kogoro and Yamagata Aritomo

[edit]

I placed some edits on their profiles based on what I read from the manga's Remembrance Arc and TsuiokuHen, but they were reverted due to lack of sourcing and "speculation", which I still don't quite comprehend. Can somebody tell me how to make those edits properly? Supaagekireddo (talk) 15:34, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

It should be worth mentioning that the one and only RK website linked to was in Chinese. Chinese! It does have beautiful pictures, though. Now if only I could read it... Also, this is completely unrelated and frivolous, but... is there a Fuji fansite anywhere? I've been looking and I can't find one... *tear* So if anyone knows where one is it would be very amazing if you could tell me about it. ^_^ --Song (talk) 22:44, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, of course. Sorry, I don't really know the difference. My point still exists, however- most readers of the English Wikipedia speak English, and so linking to a Japanese site is kind of silly. --Song (talk) 17:07, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is no equivalent English external link. It is preferred that ELs are in English, but we have foreign language ELs as well. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use images and this article

[edit]

This article has been tagged at least as early as September of 2009 [1] as containing an excessive amount of non-free imagery. It currently holds 20 such images. Anyone interested in this article should work to reduce the number of images, preferably to single digits, even less than five. If this is not done, the article may be gutted entirely of non-free content. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:14, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I remember discussing this with the editor who added all the images, but the user did not agree to remove most non-free images due to descriptions of the images in the sections.Tintor2 (talk) 16:49, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • If this were just a slavish addition of images for every character, I would have just stripped them a long time ago (examples [2][3]). I agree that the caption text does offer some improvement to the situation, but it's not a viable solution. The use is still considerably excessive. WP:NFLISTS applies in spades. I'm not eager to strip the images in this case, but if no effort is made to do so, compliance with WP:NFLISTS takes priority. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:09, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree that most images need to be removed.Tintor2 (talk) 17:11, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This article is a special case. The reason why there are 20-something images is because the amount of detail in regards to the character design merits as few images as possible to portray all of the described characters (those that appear in "The Secret Life of Characters" only, and those that do not have individual articles). If a character's design conception (what the character is based off of, how the creator decided to make the character's appearance) is there, logically. It is unusual for the author to the describing so many of his characters in this detail, especially in regards to many minor characters.
There is one way that I will agree to a reduction of images. I would be glad to "consolidate" characters into images (i.e. I found one of Iruka and Konohamaru, killing two birds with one stone). "agree that the caption text does offer some improvement to the situation" - The caption text is just a part of it. The actual descriptions in the said sections have even more information.
I am well-acquainted with Wikipedia:NFLISTS, and "consolidation" is a good way to make this further in compliance with NFLISTS.
If someone can help me find, say, Tae and Tsubame (done) in one image, or, say, the Su-shin and Heishin (done) in one picture, or Raijuta and Yutaro (done) in one, I will be glad to help.
An alternate idea would be to give some characters their own articles. This list is becoming very long, and it may make sense to give characters with a lot of description their own articles.
WhisperToMe (talk) 19:01, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I already told you once that the list needed to be trimmed with some minor characters removed (some of them barely appear in the series). Characters may have a lot of comments from the author in the article, they do not have comments from third party sources that would help them pass notabiltiy requirements.Tintor2 (talk) 19:07, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Creation/conception details by definition come from primary sources. "Reception" (how people react to characters) originates from third party sources. Which other discussions/guidelines say that usage of NONFREE images are preferred to be/ought to be based off of secondary rather than primary sources?
"with some minor characters removed (some of them barely appear in the series)" - Which characters are considered to be too insignificant? We as a community should decide this.
WhisperToMe (talk) 19:09, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I meant about your comment regarding the article's weight and giving other characters their own articles. When I joined to wikipedia and worked in some of the main characters articles, I don't remember the list was so detailed and that it had so many minor characters. By minor characters, I refer to the ones that have from little to no impact to the plot such as the one from Kenshin's one-shot and some anime exclusive characters.Tintor2 (talk) 19:14, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
None of the characters with images should be exclusively from the anime. Watsuki's "Secret Life" details are only written about characters in the manga. "When I joined to wikipedia and worked in some of the main characters articles," Watsuki wrote in detail about many minor characters. Some of them appear solely within one or two plot arcs. Some are recurring. Watsuki did describe one-shot character Raikoji Chizuru in a page, but nobody else other than her. If we are to determine which characters have little impact to the plot (those with images), we should determine which ones they are. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:16, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I meant about the comment regarding the article's weight. There is even a section named minor characters.Tintor2 (talk) 19:20, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. The characters who would be most likely to have articles split would be more "major" characters and those who appear in all of or multiple mediums
In regards to the question: "which should be listed?" - The Japanese Rurouni Kenshin link below lists many minor characters and has descriptions. Perhaps, in regards to the manga, characters who are not listed in that Japanese EL and characters who are not given the "Secret Life" treatment could be removed.
WhisperToMe (talk) 19:40, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I notice the Japanese Wikipedia groups all of the "Shishio's faction" characters in one article: ja:志々雄一派 - Could we do this on the English Wikipedia too? It would make this article smaller, and it would indirectly cut down on the number of unfree images used in a single article (as those two images would go to a different article) WhisperToMe (talk) 20:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also the number of nonfrees is down to 17, as I "consolidated" three groups of characters into a combined total of three images.
Of the remaining images:
1 is an image of the main characters - all of the pictured characters have their own articles. The image is intended to be a "summary" of the main characters in the series
Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, Sanosuke, Saito, Aoshi, and Misao are in the image
7 images are each of one character, each with a "Secret Life" profile
Udo Jin-e, Takeda Kanryu, Himura Kenji, Akamatsu Arundo, Senkaku (he is not in the "Shishio's group" image), Ōkubo Toshimichi, and Sagara Sōzō each have individual images
2 images are groupings of two or more characters that, within each grouping, share the same profile in a given "Secret Life"
Hiruma Brothers, Higashidani Family (Kamishimoemon, Uki, Ota)
6 images are groupings of two or more characters with distinct profiles in "Secret Life"s
Raijuta and Yutaro, Shishio's group (12 characters), Five of the "six comrades", Woo Heishin and the Su-shin, Tae and Tsubame, and the Tokyo Oniwabanshu (4 characters)
1 image is of a grouping of characters, but only one character in the group is profiled in a "Secret Life"
Okina has a "Secret Life" - Shiro, Okon, Omasu, and Kuro do not have "Secret Life" profiles
WhisperToMe (talk) 21:40, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Other stuff is not a valid argument to create more articles considering in this case that other wikis are very different in guidelines. No matter the reasons for the images, the number needs to be heavily reduced.Tintor2 (talk) 01:25, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware of the "other stuff" principle. But I wanted specific reasons, perhaps supported by quoted text within policy pages. If I were to cut out a "Shishio's Faction" section, how much third party reception material would I have to find? WhisperToMe (talk) 03:17, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The only images I see can are legitimate per the WP:NFCC are the four group images. The individual character images, however, does not meant the "Minimal usage" criteria of WP:NFCC, even if the captions may include creator cometary. The majority of these images simply do not significantly increase readers' understanding of the characters. —Farix (t | c) 03:01, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Minimal usage as per NFCC refers to "Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information." - And in the consolidating of photos I have done that (the group images of Shishio's faction, the five of the six comrades, etc. are a result of this clause). By simply removing every image that has two or one characters, the characters of the removed photos are not conveyed at all. Based on my understanding of the text, the "minimal usage" phrase explicitly refers to consolidation of images and not simply "using as few nonfree images as possible in an article."
WP:NFCC says "non-free images should be used judiciously to present the key visual aspects of the topic. It is inadvisable to provide a non-free image for each entry in such an article or section" - So there should be care in determining which and how many non-free images there are, and not every entry/section needs a nonfree image. This may have been what you meant to refer to. In my view, the number of nonfree images permissible or kept needs to be determined on an article by article basis, based on specifically what the article has.
In regards to "significantly increase readers' understanding" - This one could be used as a reference to determine which images go and which stay. In your opinion, which images do not "significantly" increase the understanding, and which ones do? I would like for you to read through the article and determine which images, in your opinion, do not significantly increase your understanding of the character in relation to the creation and conception information.
WhisperToMe (talk) 03:17, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about some of the images and dropped three of them (reasons are in the edit summaries) - There are 14 now. WhisperToMe (talk) 05:02, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I realized that the "Shishio arc" group pic has been split in several pieces. So I uploaded it whole. Now we have 12 nonfree images. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:17, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
some more that should be removed-
  • In regards to Tsubame, the author talked about how he had decided to give Tsubame a bowl cut after watching a TV show and deciding that she was either going to have pigtails or a bowl cut since she was supposed to be an "average" girl. Do you believe that this is not enough to justify a nonfree image? With Tae there is the lack of lipstick, the decision to use "black" (even though the image shown has her hair colored brown, in a comic book it would appear black) and how he had changed the rejected Kenshin model to have a softer female face. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:59, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You can link to a bowl cut and the user can get a good idea if they don't know already what one looks like. Doesn't matter whether its male or female as its the same cut. Similar arguments hold true for the rest. The major reason for showing the artwork is to show the stylization which isn't always easy to describe to readers. Once you have a few images of what the characters look like, the reader can use his immagination to fill in the gaps reasonably well unless there is something special about one of the characters. For all their origins, most of the characters end up having similar features and thus there is no need for so many pictures.Jinnai 19:16, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. I had the impression that using a nonfree to illustrate a creation/conception process would be enough of a fair use rationale. It seems like there needs to be a higher threshold for one. Anyway, if the rest of the community agrees that the following images need to be removed, then I will take down those ones too. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:22, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well each non-free image must be judged indivisually for why it is needed and the threshold increases with every image an article has.Jinnai 04:41, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. I am still awaiting a second opinion on the images listed - When that comes I'll remove the images that, by consensus, should be removed. WhisperToMe (talk) 21:46, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sailor Moon and Tsubame?

[edit]

Does Watsuki go into any more detail about the Sailor Moon inspiration for Sanjō Tsubame's character design? Currently on Sailor Saturn it's asserted that Tsubame was designed after Hotaru, but the citation here isn't explicit enough to port over to Sailor Saturn. Please help? --Malkinann (talk) 04:20, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

From what I read in the character design section, Watsuki does not specify which character Tsubame's design comes from - There may be more information in the Rurouni Kenshin Profiles work or in official works that have not been translated from Japanese. In addition the Brazilian Editora JBC editions may provide additional information added by the Brazilian editors.
I would also suggest stopping by the ja:Wikipedia:Chatsubo and ask Japanese people to look up Japanese sources to see if any secondary or primary sources fingered a particular character.

Use of non-free images on this article

[edit]

This article has been identified as containing an excessive quantity of non-free content. Per the Foundation's requirement to keep non-free media use minimal, and per Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria #3, the non-free images on this article have been removed. Please note:

  • The presence of a fair use rationale for this article on an image description page does not make it acceptable for a given use.
  • Blanket restoration of the non-free images that have been removed can and most likely will be reverted, with subsequent reporting action possible.
  • If some restoration is desired, careful consideration of exactly what non-free media to use must be made, paying special attention to WP:NFCC #1 and #8. In most cases non-free media needs to be tied directly to the prose of the article, most preferably with inline citations tying the discussion to secondary sources regarding the image per Wikipedia:Verifiability.

If this is a list type article, please read the WP:NFLISTS guideline. If you wish to dispute this removal, it may be helpful to read WP:OVERUSE, as it answers a number of typical questions and responses to removals such as this. If after reading these, you still feel there is grounds for restoration of most or all of the media that have been removed, please post to Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. These names = place names in Niigata

[edit]

Because Watsuki grew up in Nagaoka, Niigata (including former Koshiji, Niigata), he named these characters after the real places in Niigata. There's an interchange named "Sanjō Tsubame" in Tsubame, Niigata and Sanjō, Niigata. http://echigo.ne.jp/~mikio/ura/etkensin.htm http://www7.plala.or.jp/slamdunce/rurouni-motoneta.htm Please add these place names.--Shinkansen Fan (talk) 17:29, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Those that don't have any proper reception should be merged. It's as simple as that. You may want to try finding Japanese coverage for characters though. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 07:35, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Enishi and Makoto strike me as ones that should have reception, being the two primary antagonists (Makoto especially considering the live action version). Tomoe again strikes me as someone that should be notable given her role in a notable two part OVA. Some of the others also strike me as borderline but I think those are the 3 priority characters to concentrate on. In this case, I think it's acceptable to leave the articles as they are for a few weeks while research is carried out, and then perform merges after that time. It's not like there is a shortage of critical commentary on the series and its characters. SephyTheThird (talk) 08:56, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
