Merger proposal

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
I'm withdrawing my merger proposal and added a new proposal below to move the article instead. 82.136.210.153 (talk) 16:56, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

African characters in comics and List of black animated characters should be merged to List of black animated non-superhero characters. Why? First of all, the lead of List of black animated characters says the list includes fictional characters found in comic books. (It lists 0 of those, by the way.) This means the African characters in comics can be merged into the List of black animated characters. Secondly, from the result of that merger, all superhero characters should be removed, because we already have the List of black superheroes that lists all superheroes including those in "comic books" and "other media". --82.136.210.153 (talk) 13:02, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify. The main problem with African characters in comics and List of black animated characters is that they both list so many black superheroes, and we already have a huge List of black superheroes. --82.136.210.153 (talk) 13:09, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
How do you look at the idea of moving List of black animated characters to List of black animated non-superhero characters, given the already existing List of black superheroes? --82.136.210.153 (talk) 22:55, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List of black animated charactersList of black animated non-superhero characters – This article should not list superheroes, because animated superhero characters are already listed in various sections of the List of black superheroes article. The latter already includes sections for comic books, newspapers, novels and anthologies, webcomics, television and movies. 82.136.210.153 (talk) 16:53, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Of course, the recently added § Video game characters section would need to be split, or would need its own article. (Because the List of black superheroes article does not yet have a section about video game characters.) --82.136.210.153 (talk) 17:01, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Question can you clarify the extent of the perceived problem? There are a great many super characters book characters but not all of them get animated. The article looks quite small. What is the overlap problem? Gregkaye 19:50, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The List of black animated characters says it "lists fictional characters found in comic books, television, motion pictures and other forms of media", and the List of black superheroes says it "lists characters found in comic books and other media". Before I added the "Video game characters" section to the former, it contained only a Television section; a section that is also in the latter article. This is a partial duplication of efforts, because what is on television is animated. The only difference would is that one lists all characters, while the other lists only superheroes. Most of the characters in the List of black animated characters are superheroes. They are overlapping in that we have § Television and § Television. Now, you can say 'but this is only a problem for television characters', but this is not true. The leads of both articles say 'and other media'. For example, the only reason that the List of black superheroes does not yet have a Video game characters section is because I added that to the List of black animated characters, and not (yet) to the List of black superheroes. The only difference between both articles, other than some media not being animated, is whether the characters are superheroes or not. Therefore it makes more sense to either a) merge them and add a superhero yes/no column, or b) as I am suggesting, split the articles into superheroes and non-superheroes lists. By the way, note that the List of black animated characters even says "found in comic books". --82.136.210.153 (talk) 21:23, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware that my explanation isn't 100% accurate, but there is definitely a clear overlap. I'm too tired to discuss it further, feel free to close the request. --82.136.210.153 (talk) 21:27, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: Yes, there's overlap between the two lists, but I don't perceive that as a problem. Some lists are bound to overlap, and that's just fine, as far as I can see. "List of black animated non-superhero characters" sounds awkward and gives too much significance to superheros - not being a superhero shouldn't be a defining characteristic of a character. Whether the majority of characters listed here are superheros or not, there are plenty of non-superhero black characters in animation, even if they still have to be added here. This list definitely needs to be cleaned up though. I would suggest removing the Alter Ego(s) section and the Teams/Associations section, since that's giving too much weight to the superhero characters. Alter egos could still be provided in parentheses, under the Name column.
A "Video game characters" section would make sense in the List of black superheroes article, and there should be a third article created for all black video game characters, superheroes and non-superheroes alike. But a video game section shouldn't be included here, since animation is considered its own medium, separate from video games. The "other forms of media" statement should be removed from this article's lead, and so should the statement about comic-books, since comic-books count as a separate medium from animation as well. --Jpcase (talk) 16:46, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Convert to Table

[edit]

Can someone please convert this to a table? The current format is difficult to edit in visual editor mode. --Qualiesin (talk) 04:43, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I'm going to get the sources for all the entries (there aren't that many unsourced entries left), THEN I'll change it to a table. That's my plan. I just started working on the article about a week ago, and I've made huge progress since then... and I even have a whole bunch more entries to add in too. Splitting proposal

[edit]

To take care of the {{very long}} for this article, I propose splitting the article by century, if not by decade. Snowman304|talk 05:20, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

By century may be TOO big, that's my only issue. I'd say by decade would probably be better. I thought I posted this here, but I mentioned this on the page of @ Isaidnoway , at User talk:Isaidnoway/Archive 6#I don't disagree. Here is part of what I said:
I saw your recent edit. The List of black animated characters page IS getting long (likely due to all the "new" characters I keep adding and I still have MORE to add, which I've loosely listed here). But, HOW should it be split? By year? According to the "section sizes" template I added to Talk:List of black animated characters, the following are the biggest sections:
* In the 1990s (50,000+ bytes)
* In the 2000s (68,000+ bytes)
* In the 2010s (97,000+ bytes)
* In the 2020s (60,000+ bytes)
Perhaps each of those could be split into their own articles?
I also noted a discussion, in which I was told that list splits "likely come down to editorial judgement, what best helps a reader", adding "either there can be a bold split of the aforementioned four sections into their own articles, or... there could be further discussion on Talk:List of black animated characters. Whichever you think would be better" to which Isaidnoway said, "whatever y'all think is the best solution for splitting to relieve the article size is fine with me. Thanks for reaching out." I also noted that in that discussion, "list mergers *also* comes down to editorial judgment, while saying to keep in mind WP:NLIST."
Otherwise, I am continuing to add entries to the main page. Historyday01 (talk) 02:52, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Jackson 5

[edit]

If Mr. T and The Harlem Globetrotters are listed here, shouldn't the Jacksons also be included? Grandmajohnnym|talk 10:34, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
