Does anyone know if the M format was ever released in PAL format? Colin99 (talk) 10:32, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sony reference

RE: reference to Sony below: It is more likely that Betacam was developed in response to M. RCA was the big name at the time and Sony was doing very well in pro market with their 3/4". RCA asked Panasonic to make a format that was both better (approximately equivalent to 1" type c in quality and small enough to make the first one piece camcorder - the HAWKEYE. In a major reorganization, RCA soon abandoned the broadcast camera/VTR business. M was slightly superior (particularly in the reds vs blues as it dedicated more bandwidth to the RED area, which is somewhat more important visually. Sony gave bandwidth equally to RED and blue for engineering reasons.) M failed versus Betacam mainly because Sony had 90 percent of the 3/4" market and they made it easy to edit from a Sony Betacam player to a Sony 3/4" edit deck. Both Panasonic and Sony promoted the idea of the camcorder for shooting in the field (rather than the existing camera recording to a separate 3/4" recorder) and editing to 3/4" to lessen the cost of transition. however the vast majority of stations had Sony edit decks and Sony edit controllers vs Panasonic - they tended toward Sony.
