Diddums

[edit]

"One of her most well known characters was a chubby toddler named “Diddums” which was created as a celluloid doll by Cascelloid/Palitory. Such was the success of her “Diddums” doll that they were then made from rubber"[1]. Is this character the origin, or a populariser, of the expression "aw, diddums", used sarcastically when someone complains about a trivial grievance? 203.221.238.142 (talk) 00:22, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno. It may well have interacted, but it doesn't appear to be the origin: the OED has an 1893 citation for the term from EF Benson, pre-dating the doll and the c.WW1 drawing it was based on. Gordonofcartoon (talk) 02:05, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
