Not a picture of Malik Ambar
[edit]That is definately not a picture of Malik Ambar. He was a dark skinned Ethiopian. This picture looks like a northern Indian. I'm going to find a proper picture and put it there. vap (talk) 19:55, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I just took it down
[edit]If you are going to make a picture of someone, please make it look like them. http://www.tigrai.org/News/Articles1/AfroIndian.jpg http://www.xanam.co.uk/shopping/uploadImage/aweb%20ambar.jpg vap (talk) 22:08, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Close resemblace
[edit]Pictures of Malik Ambar are rare and those published on the website may not be accurate. Though the link that yu have provided bears a close resemblance with the pic I posted, does not mean that the picture posted was incorrect. You are just assuming. History is not based on assumptions. And sir, please refrain form using words like North Indian and South Indian. Please do not discriminate Historical figures on racial grounds.
- I too think you have the wrong picture posted. It looks as though the paper you cite is actually showing, The emperor Jahangir the man that shot Malik. There are multiple reliable sources that show him with much darker skin. It is very possible the paper you cite has made a mistake. Exit2DOS2000•T•C• 08:37, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Not to mention...
[edit]That he was from ETHIOPIA in the 1500's!! Sure there were light skinned Ethiopians, but those wouldn't have been sold into slavery! vap (talk) 09:57, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Times of India
[edit]There are no multiple sources that describe Malik Ambar as the same in every picture. His picture keeps varying. Artists have drawn him differently on a number of occasions. And that paper where I have cited the source does not show Jehangir, one can easily make out the difference. The picture of Malik Ambar was published in a highly reputed newspaper like Times of India and they know if they post the wrong picture they might be dragged to the court, so it is quite obvious that the writer and the editor published the picture only after consulting the Historians and researching thoroughly. That can't be the case because you wouldn't have this obviously wrong picture up. The times would have been sued too. The problem is that people probably didn't get offended because Malik was drawn as looking like them, thus not hurting any self esteems. Had he looked like the average Indian and then been drawn like a Black African(the reverse of what's happening here) many would have gotten offended. Since he is long dead we have to use common sense.
- He was an Ethopian African.
- Arabs sold non-Mulsim(possibly non-abrahamic?) Afrincans into slavery.
- Ethopians are generally darker than this picture, especially born in non coastal cities.
with that information, I'd say that the TOC was mistaken, or lying as most historians do today and chose not to show him as an African, but rather like them. I would also submit that you know this is true, for if you really believed what you were putting in this article, you would have responded to me when I first started the discussion, rather than waiting a week, continuing to make ninja edits. Just a year back some local newspapers here carried a news item which said that some local people held a protest march in front of the Commissioner’s office as the Municipal Corporation authorities had broken the 'Hamam' of Malik Ambar. Some people had even turned violent during the protest. The news appeared way back in the year 1994. So it is quite evident that people know their local heroes well and how he looked like. So those whoever would publish the picture would think twice before publishing it thus to avoid the public wrath. History is not based on assumptions but on facts, so just assuming that Malik Ambar was very dark wouldn't solve the problem, and whosoever sees the picture can easily identify Malik Ambar as an African and not Jehangir. And one cannot blame the entire lot of Historians for the misdeeds of a few. What you say about today's historians is not true and saying that historians lie, can again be termed as an offence. And yeh, about not responding you, perhaps I was a little too busy editing some new pages on Wikipedia since I am a new page patroler. Cheers Nefirious (talk) Nefirious (talk)
