"Following Hussain's capture during the war, the Indians did not register his legal status as a prisoner of war (POW), stripping him of certain rights that he would otherwise be entitled to by international law."
I am just a casual reader with no background in this case or this conflict, but this phrasing reads as fundamentally incorrect to me. If Pakistan thought he was dead, and India did not report his capture, that is a grave violation of international law by India.
"Stripping" here implies due process. Furthermore, India did not "strip" him of his rights, to which "he would otherwise be entitled to by international law". India broke international law in denying him the most basic rights of a POW, to which he remained fully entitled throughout the period of his capture. These rights included a report of his capture to Pakistan (and through them, his family), visits by the Red Cross, the right to not be tortured and maimed, etc.
I am assuming this is an imprecision in phrasing, perhaps in translation? Whether I have understood the text and its implications correctly or not, I feel strongly that this should be clarified. 216.164.50.145 (talk) 07:56, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
