There was nothing 'so called' about the massacre at Tranent, in which 12 were killed, including some innocent people who were not even present at the meeting, and 20 injured. I have written the only book on this subject - which unfortunately, your correspondent has never heard of - and its second edition is published by East Lothian District Library. Title is simply "The Tranent Massacre" by Sandy Mullay - borrow it or buy.
Since you are an expert on the subject, please help us by adding some more and better information to the article, such as what precisely the protestors were protesting against, and where precisely this all took place (ie wider context for the general reader). Also see if any of the main characters have their own articles, (or need their own articles written), eg 'Major Wight', the 'Cinque Ports Dragoons' etc, these can then be linked to the article to allow readers to get more background info. I have added the (absentee) role of the overall regimental CO, Viscount Hawkesbury - later British Premier Lord Liverpool - who was criticized for not being present, lifted from his Wikipedia biography.Cloptonson (talk) 10:05, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"Rape" in the phrase "rape and pillage" is used in its original sense, meaning to take by force or violence, and doesn't necessarily have a sexual connotation. Is there any evidence of sexual violation in the historical record? The cited reference doesn't provide any. Northern rock (talk) 09:30, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
