My dad and I watched the original Masters of Disaster at Oshkosh 2004.

They were incredible; never saw anything like them before. Wish my kids would have watched them (my kids are board with airplanes). But this display included 3 biplanes, fiery bombs, jet powered trucks with 200’ trails of smoke and flame, rap music playing, dogs barking on the loud speakers, and one of the biplanes (black) that could pull back and climb like a rocket into the clouds with a GE J85 turbojeg strapped between its main-gear; pure chaos.

These guys weren’t just thinking outside the box, it was obvious they’d never been put inside 'the box'.

I remember us sitting there watching all of this, my dad turning to me, smiled and said “this isn’t an air show”. He grinned, turned back and watched the rest of it.

We watched them every time they performed that week and never tired of it.

I feel richer having the privilege to have watched their performances. I feel diminished knowing two of those three pilots are no longer with us.
