I'll be reviewing this—I don't know anything about baseball so if something in this review is extremely wrong then pardon me

Infobox and lead

[edit]
  • Infobox says he was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, but prose says he was born in Las Villas; while both locations are related, it's best to leave it consistent
  • I don't see where MLB wins leader is mentioned on prose
  • Lead looks good

More will follow. Wetrorave (talk) 21:44, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Life and career

[edit]

Early life, first stints in the majors

[edit]
  • Ref 2 alone supports the second, third, and fourth statements alone, so ref 3 isn't needed
  • "drawing attention from Major League Baseball (MLB) scouts." – ref 2 says that he "was heavily followed by Cuban and American scouts", but does not state specifically MLB scouts (neither does ref 3)

More will follow II. Wetrorave (talk) 22:00, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • "with 220 innings pitched."[9] – where is this mentioned at 9
  • I'm not sure how the second and third sentences of the seventh paragraph are supported by ref 8—only ref 2 there seems fine to me
  • ""He’s a lot faster and has come with quite a scroogie," the hitter observed." > "The hitter said that ""he's a lot faster and has come with quite a scroogie"."
  • "the Philadelphia Phillies collapsed" – remove the wikilink since PP has already been linked before

Finished a review of the first section; second coming soon. Wetrorave (talk) 03:59, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Houston Astros (1965-68)

[edit]
  • "posted an 0.72 ERA" – where is this number mentioned at ref 15
    • For these gamelogs, you can get the statistics over a range of dates by clicking on two of them. If you click the first and the fifteenth game, a pop-up window will arise, showing you (among other things) what his ERA was over that span. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 18:13, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • ""I've created a monster" bragged manager Grady Hatton after Cuellar posted a 1.29 ERA in his first four starts." > "After Cuellar posted a 1.29 ERA in his first four starts, manager Grady Hatton said: "I've created a monster"."
  • ""For a while, all Cuellar wanted to do was throw screwballs," Hatton explained. "But this year," > "Hatton explained: "For a while, all Cuellar wanted to do was throw screwballs. But this year,"
  • "He came into the contest in relief of Chris Short in the 11th. Of the seven batters he faced, the only baserunner he allowed in the two shutout innings he pitched was Carl Yastrzemski, who recorded a 12th-inning single." – where is this mentioned at ref 27
  • "held the Philadelphia Phillies" – remove the wikilink vol. II

Baltimore Orioles (1969-76)

[edit]
  • Looks good! I'm surprised to see this

California Angels (1977), later career

[edit]
  • The third paragraph is unsourced

Pitching style

[edit]
  • "his excellent screwball" – attribute this statement to the writer of ref 45 since it's subjective
  • "By cleverly selecting" – again, 'cleverly' is subjective, attribute this statement
  • ""To watch him pitch was amazing," recalled fellow Oriole pitcher Dick Hall. "It seemed" > "Fellow Oriole pitcher Dick Hall recalled: "To watch him pitch was amazing. It seemed"
  • "Sports Illustrated said" – wikilink Sports Illustrated to Sports Illustrated
  • ""Cuellar's screwball is a pitch nobody else in baseball throws, and he can change speeds on it," observed Ken McMullen of the Angels." > "Ken McMullen of the Angels opined that "Cuellar's screwball is a pitch nobody else in baseball throws, and he can change speeds on it;""

Personal life

[edit]
  • "his first marriage was falling apart," > "he was breaking up with his first wife" and specify the name of the wife if possible
  • ""“He was like an artist,” Palmer remembered. “He" > ""Palmer remembered him as "like an artist. He" – without the curly quotation mark
  • The first two statements of the second paragraph are sourced by ref 118, but how exacly? This source apparently doesn't even mention the name "Cuellar"
  • ""Crazy Horse" – remove the bold and italics markup
  • "When Boog Powell" – remove Boog Powell wikilink as it has already been linked before
[edit]

Overall

[edit]

On hold, here's how the article is:

Good Article review progress box
Criteria: 1a. prose () 1b. MoS () 2a. ref layout () 2b. cites WP:RS () 2c. no WP:OR () 2d. no WP:CV ()
3a. broadness () 3b. focus () 4. neutral () 5. stable () 6a. free or tagged images () 6b. pics relevant ()
Note: this represents where the article stands relative to the Good Article criteria. Criteria marked are unassessed

Prose is at times unencyclopedic, like it's from a story-telling; refs do not meet MOS; and subjective statements are asserted as facts.

It does have its problems but is quite close to GA. It has gone unreviewed for months though, so it's probably better than when you first nominated it. Wetrorave (talk) 14:37, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like all the issues have been addressed; looks like a nice  Pass to me. Wetrorave (talk) 13:45, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
