Happy with present arrangement of current ones in Bold - anyway if seperating do AFTER this year's election to avoid having three lists - past, current, and new eg "Botany" Hugo999 (talk) 10:18, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Neutrality of Article

There are some points in the article that are inherently biased such as, "Until 1996 the number of Māori electorates was fixed at four, significantly under-representing Māori in Parliament." 2020 update

Hi there, the Electoral Commission has recently revised New Zealand's electorates. According to the 1 News article from 17 April, these are the following changes:

Name changes

• Whangarei becomes Whangārei • Helensville becomes Kaipara ki Mahurangi • Rodney becomes Whangaparāoa • Manukau East becomes Panmure-Ōtāhuhu • Flat Bush, the proposed name for the new electorate, becomes Takanini • Hunua becomes Port Waikato • Rimutaka becomes Remutaka • Port Hills becomes Banks Peninsula • Dunedin North becomes Dunedin • Dunedin South becomes Taieri • Clutha-Southland becomes Southland

Main boundary changes – North Island

- Rodney, (now Whangaparāoa) includes Dairy Flat and Coatesville. - Helensville, (Kaipara ki Mahurangi), extends into Northland, Whangaparāoa and Upper Harbour – and the Waitakere Ranges now go into New Lynn. - Changes have been made to Mt Roskill, Maungakiekie, Manukau East and Manurewa for the new Takanini electorate. - A part of Maungarei/Mount Wellington moves into Panmure-Ōtāhuhu. - The new electorate of Takanini pulls in voters from Manurewa, Papakura, Wattle Downs and Takanini. - Whangārei and Bay of Plenty also are adjusted.

Main boundary changes – South Island

- The area of Brightwater goes from Nelson to West-Coast Tasman. - Selwyn loses Banks Peninsula to Port Hills (now named Banks Peninsula), and changes made to Ilam, Wigram, Banks Peninsula, Christchurch East and Rangitata. - Alexandra and Clyde areas go from Waitaki to Clutha-Southland (now Southland). - Otago Peninsula moves from Dunedin South (now Taieri) to Dunedin North (now Dunedin). - South Otago added to Taieri from Southland. - Invercargill expands into western Southland.

Māori electorate changes

- Tāmaki Makaurau gets parts of Te Atatū South from Te Tai Tokerau and also takes area east of Manurewa and Waiheke Island from Hauraki-Waikato. - Small changes between Ikaroa-Rāwhiti and Te Tai Tonga made in Naenae.

Abolished (former) Electorates

I have started a draft article to list all the former electorates in a form that is more helpful than the current list. It is substantial though, so I would appreciate any help, no matter how little, in editing it. Infoboxes

I've noticed that articles about New Zealand electorates use the generic constituency infobox. On the Simple English Wikipedia, we have our own infobox for New Zealand electorates: Template:Infobox NZ electorate. On simplewiki we have more country-specific infoboxes for constituency articles and I'm not currently proposing to have them all on enwiki, but I think that because so many terms are specific to New Zealand (e.g "List MP", "general/Māori electorate", etc) that we should be using an infobox template specific to New Zealand (similar to what we do for constituencies/electoral districts/electoral divisions/electorates/congressional districts in Australia, Canada, France, India, Malaysia, Russia, Turkey, the UK and the US, plus for European Parliament constituencies.

The NZ template on simplewiki is based on the generic template and with similar parameters to the Australian template, but uses the same top style as the French template. It currently works on current and former general and Māori electorates of the New Zealand House of Representatives, so at the moment it doesn't work for constituencies of the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau. It includes plenty of optional information too such as Māori names, regions, largest cities/towns/suburbs, MPs and their parties, list MPs and their parties, population, etc. It also obviously includes the option for a map to be added, though you need to specify what area the map is showing (e.g Epsom has an inset for Auckland as it is located in Auckland while Southland just shows a map of New Zealand, as it is simply located on the South Island and is large enough not to need an inset).

P.S: we need to update the maps to 2023 boundaries. Using 2014 boundaries isn't helpful because it's nine years old, plus it means that many electorate articles don't have a map. @Twotwofourtysix, I know you made some interactive maps of Australian electorates and US congressional districts with the latest boundaries, do you think you could do that for New Zealand too? There's no such thing as "2023 boundaries"; we are currently using electorate boundaries that were defined for the 2020 general election. Boundaries get adjusted some time after each census, and given that census occurrences and general elections aren't aligned, electorate boundaries change less frequently than us having elections. But your general message is true, QLDer in NSW: not all current electorates have maps, and that's not good enough. Schwede66 04:38, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting me. But yeah I think we should update all the maps to the latest boundaries whenever an election is held and created maps of all the new electorates. QLDer in NSW (talk) 01:18, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

I also noticed this morning that across the New Zealand electorates there seems to be a number of caption rendering issues in the infoboxes. For example in Ilam (New Zealand electorate) the caption is rendered as "Location of Ilamwithin Canterbury" where a space is missing between Ilam and within. A different issue can be seen in Māngere (New Zealand electorate) where the caption is rendered without the electorate name "Location of within Auckland".

I'm happy to make whatever edits are required to make these captions consistent, but am relatively new to Wikipedia editing so would need to be steered in the right direction. Grogersxyz (talk) 18:58, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
