Fair use rationale for Image:Opera.svg

[edit]

Image:Opera.svg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

History?

[edit]

A short text on the history - at least the initial release date - would be nice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.191.86.14 (talk) 09:59, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the past, I've used opera on the Psion Series Five. I'm not sure if this was a beta or public release.41.242.97.249 (talk) 05:45, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Future development

[edit]

Version 9's been scraped, they're focusing on developing 9.5. And even that's been delayed. See here: http://my.opera.com/operamobile/blog/2008/02/07/where-did-opera-mobile-v9-0-go http://my.opera.com/operamobile/blog/2008/03/28/hang-in-there The Future Development section needs to be updated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Qasibr (talkcontribs) 17:04, 27 April 2008 (UTC) I added a line about ripped versions from the Diamond (avail in Asia) loose on the web. 71.184.119.123 (talk) 15:33, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

another 1.5 years have gone by and again, the future development section needs to be updated. it is still talking about 9.5. the lack of information and the quality of the section kinda makes me think it should be removed altogether. — owl order (talk) 21:19, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image

[edit]

Replaced the image again, the previous one is a picture of the HTC version, the image now is of the free, downloadable one.

Please, contact me before removing. MasterOfTheXP (talk) 23:54, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First sentence

[edit]

I disagree with saying that it is designed for smartphones and PDA's when practically any java phone can run this software, I've had it successfully running on a SE K800, K610, C902 and C903 - none of which fit into the catergory of "Smartphone/PDA" 00:56, 26 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.33.55.227 (talk)

Are you sure you ran Opera Mobile on those Sony Ericsson phones? Opera Mobile is only available for several smartphone platforms. I personally believe the software you ran on your phones was Opera Mini instead. — owl order (talk) 21:18, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stable Release

[edit]

I'm updating the stable release to version 9.7. Even though 8.65 was the last stable version released to download, newer versions are available pre-installed on phones and those versions are not listed as betas. The reaseon than non beta versions are not available to download is that Opera doesn't give Opera Mobile as free software, it is intended for sale to Mobile operators and OEM as mentioned in this article [1] --Chris Ssk talk 11:38, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

relevence won prices

[edit]

The prices won all are fairly old. It looks like Opera stopped publishing such a list themselves. Prices aren't really relevent since they refer to older versions. Shall we delete this section? --IIVeaa (talk) 12:14, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Also

[edit]

As I stated in the edit summary, there's no reason for it to not be included in the "See also" section, as it is a valid comparable article that is likely to interest readers. See Firefox for mobile's "See also" section, as well as Opera mini. WP:SEEALSO says Links included in the "See also" section may be useful for readers seeking to read as much about a topic as possible, including subjects only peripherally related to the one in question. as they are both mobile browsers, it is not unreasonable to include it in the section. - SudoGhost 10:38, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"I don't like it" and "there are too many" are not valid reasons, as there are not too many, and Opera and Firefox are both very similar, to the point that no other mobile browsers can be (they are both installable mobile versions of popular desktop browsers). There are two fish in that pond. Not liking one does not give license to remove it. - SudoGhost 10:46, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So, what about Chrome Mobile? or should I name another few. Maybe we should make it a table with what engine they use and what platforms other mobile browsers support. Oh, wait, we've already got that in The list of Popular mobile browsers--IIVeaa (talk) 10:54, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is no Chrome Mobile. If you're referring to the stock Android OS browser, that is not a user-installable, mobile browser, and it is not widely known as "Chrome Mobile". Look at this list. How many of those browsers do you think regular readers will recognize? Opera, and Firefox. Those are the only two with easily recognizable desktop equivalents. That is why it is in the "See also" list. Per WP:SEEALSO, that entry is useful for readers seeking to read as much about a topic as possible, including subjects only peripherally related to the one in question. - SudoGhost 10:59, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, pointing to it being the same in the Firefox article is a bit silly since that article was changed at almost the same time --IIVeaa (talk) 11:03, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Be that as it may, you've shown no reason for the entry to not be in the article. - SudoGhost 11:06, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

permissions

[edit]

Perhaps it should be mentioned in this article that the latest version of Opera Mobile has what many consider to be a very intrusive set of permissions that seem to violate privacy. See comments here, e.g. "* 1. CAN'T *AUTO* TURN OFF shared location, camera permissions, history nor cache. 2. NO httpS / SSL / secure search. 3. RUNS 24/7, spies, eats ram, datamines. 4. NEEDS *AUTO OFF* @ exit. 5. new *HITLER* PERMISSIONS: "gps location", "control NFC", "read SENSITIVE LOG DATA", "TAKE PICTURES & VIDEO", "read phone status & ID". 6. do *NAZIS* own it? ." http://www.appbrain.com/app/opera-mobile-web-browser/com.opera.browser 74.102.88.247 (talk) 02:30, 5 March 2012 (UTC) R.E.D.[reply]

For one, wikipedia tries to have a neutral point of view, and refering to nazis and hitler is very hyperbolic. Having more data collected isn't something that is specific to Opera Mobile, lots of apps seems to do that these days. If there are news sources specifically reporting on the privacy policy of Opera Mobile, then I'll reconcider adding it to the page. --Vera (talk) 11:34, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's not, and actually Opera explains everything officially here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=972232 --Rafaelluik (talk) 21:48, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not Opera compatible ::)

[edit]

Articles cannot be displayed with Opera Mobile 10 anymore. It is the most popular browser for older Windows Mobile 6.5 machines. Main page works, search works, but only the section headers are displayed in the articles, and it is not possible to open them. It was working fine some weeks ago.
