Schubert was part of a controversial divorce as the dean of Abilene Christian University His first wife Jamie Schubert, filed for divorce from him in 2014 after 22 years, stating irreconcilable differences. The board of directors at Abilene Christian University faced a decision regarding Schubert's position. Despite dismissing other faculty and staff for divorce, they allowed him to keep his job.
